WWCC Offense Explodes versus CWC

On Saturday versus Central Wyoming College in Rock Springs the WWCC Mustang's offense exploded for eight goals against the Rustlers. The scoring came quick and in bunches in the first half. Braxton Hamilton started the scoring off in the 2nd minute when he found a rebound in the box and beat the CWC keeper. The goals kept coming for the Mustangs as Brandon Bushman scored in the 7th minute on a Joe Lake assist. It took WWCC another twenty minutes before they scored again, when Taylor Ford notched a score of his right foot from an Erick Mata assist. The 33rd minute saw Brandon Bushman get his second goal of the match off of another Joe Lake assist. Joe Lake tallied a goal in the 39th minute assisted by Omar Jaimes, this goal was the final of the half as the Mustangs lead the Rustlers 5 to 0.
The second half was again kind to the Mustangs in the offensive categories but it also saw the Rustlers come alive and score. The first goal in the second half was from Chris Byers who had received a nice ball from Joe Lake in the 53rd minute. The Rustlers scored the next two goals in the 65th and 71st minute on a back-up defensive unit for the Mustangs. Kyle Howe notched the seven goal for WWCC on a penalty kick in the 74th minute. Omar Jaimes finished the scoring for the Mustangs in the 78th minute on a kick from just inside the 18 yard box. The Rustlers would not quit and scored their third goal with 7 seconds remaining. Oscar Delgado played his first complete game in the goal for the Mustangs and picks up the win. Here are the final offensive stats for the Mustangs; Joe Lake 5 points (1 goal, 3 assists), Brandon Bushman 4 points (2 goals), Omar Jaimes 3 points (1 goal, 1 assist), Braxton Hamilton 2 points (1 goal), Taylor Ford 2 points (1 goal), Chris Byers 2 points (1 goal), Kyle Howe 2 points (1 goal) and Erick Mata 1 point (1 assist). Mustangs Lose a Heart Breaker

On Saturday in Rock Springs WY the Madison Dragons Soccer Club (BYU-Idaho) faced the Mustangs of Western Wyoming Community College. It was a very close and well fought battle between these two squads. Both teams saw some good opportunities at the goal in the first half both never team could punch it in. So after 45 minutes the Mustangs and Dragons were tied at zero.

In the second half the action again heated up with the Dragons taking more shots than the Mustangs, however a lot of the Dragons shots were from long distance and did not bother the Mustang keeper. During the course of the match both teams had goals called back by the referee. In the first half an apparent own goal was called back due to a prior foul on the play and in the second half a header by Joe Lake was also nullified by an offsides call. At the end of 90 minutes the score was still zero to zero.

The two teams headed into sudden death overtime. In the first 10 minutes of overtime it was again a very even match. But in the 98th minute the lone goal of the match occurred. On a low crossing ball the Dragons were able to re-direct it towards their goal and keeper Taylor Whetman was only able to slow it down. The ball fully crossed line before Whetman pulled it out of the goal. This loss drops the Mustang's record to 4 wins, 4 losses and 2 ties.

WWCC Soars Past Huskies

On Tuesday at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs CO the Air Force Prep School Huskies faced off against the Mustangs of Western Wyoming on the soccer pitch. WWCC held the advantage of possession for the majority of the match but the Huskies found the net first in the 19th minute when they countered quickly on WWCC. The Mustangs equalized in the 40th minute when Omar Jaimes sent a great diagonal ball to a streaking Kyle Seljaas who beat the keeper. The scored stayed the same at 1 goal a piece at the half.
In the second half the Mustangs still saw much of the possession and were able to put more shots on frame to secure the game for them. Mika Goodman scored the next two goals for WWCC. The first Goodman goal came in the 59th minute when he collected a deflected ball about 20 yards from goal and beat the Prep keeper to the near post. Mika's second goal came from a good pass off of Erick Mata's foot. Mika side stepped the keeper about 20 yards from goal and dribbled in the ball for an easy goal in the 67th minute. Joe Lake added the fourth and final goal of the match when he gathered in a ball from Omar Jaimes and place the ball nicely to the right of the keeper in the 87th minute. The Prep school proved that they would not quit and scored their second goal in the 88th minute beating the Mustangs defense and keeper from the left side of the field. The game ended with WWCC having 4 goals and Air Force Prep 2 goals. The win improves the Mustang's record to 4 wins, 3 losses and 2 ties.

WWCC Back to Winning Ways

On Saturday in Rock Springs the WWCC Mustangs got back to their winning ways and back to scoring goals. Their opponents were the Bruins of Salt Lake CC. The Bruins and the Mustangs faced each other in the Mustang's first scrimmage of the season. In the scrimmage in August the Bruins beat the Mustangs by a goal. Today's outcome would be different.
The Mustangs came out of the gates slow and allowed SLCC goals in the 4th and 10th minute of the match. But hand it to the Mustangs who picked up their play and intensity instead of quitting at such an uphill battle. The first WWCC goal was scored by Braxton Hamilton in the 28th minute when he was sent a great pass by Gilbert Gonzalez. But that was all the offense that WWCC could muster in the first half, the half time score was WWCC 1 - SLCC 2.

In the second half the Mustangs imposed their will on the Bruins and scored four goals. The equalizing goal cam from Brandon Bushman off of a Taylor Ford assist in the 57th minute. Mika Goodman provided the game winning goal in the 79th minute with a Braxton Hamilton assist. At this point of the match WWCC had a 1 goal lead and Colter Miller just might have saved the match as he made a kick save on the goal line after the ball had gotten past the WWCC keeper. The Mustangs kept the momentum and kept looking for more chances and found them. In the 82nd minute Phil Angerhoffer sent a great ball to Braxton Hamilton for his second goal of the match. The final goal was scored by Joe Lake in the 88th minute after Omar Jaimes touched it to him off of a long throw. This win moves the WWCC record back to .500 at 3 wins, 3 losses and 3 ties.

Game Stats - Shots: WWCC 14, SLCC 19 - Keeper Saves: WWCC 11, SLCC 7 - Corner Kicks: WWCC 2, SLCC 7

Two Losses in a Row for 'Stangs

On Friday in Laramie WY the WWCC Mustangs squared off against the University of Wyoming club team. The match saw the Cowboys score first in the 22nd minute after the ball bounced off of the crossbar to an oncoming Wyoming player who found the back of the net. The score at halftime was UW 1 - WWCC 0. The Mustangs, still not back on track after their match in Cheyenne and battling a flu bug, hand a lot more chances at goal in the second half but could not find the net. Joe Lake had 4 shots in the second half, Omar Jaimes had 2 shots with Kyle Seljaas, Mika Goodman and Gilbert Gonzalez each getting in one shot.
The Cowboys added two insurance goals in the 55th minute and the 72nd minute to take a lead that stayed for the rest of the match - UW 3 - WWCC 0.

Game Stats - Shots: WWCC 15, UW 14 - Keeper Saves: WWCC 6, UW 10 - Corner Kicks: WWCC 5, UW 4.

Mustangs Disappoint in Region IX Game

On Wednesday in Cheyenne WY, the WWCC Mustangs disappointed themselves and their followers by playing their worst match of the season. Laramie County Community College Golden Eagles jumped on the Mustangs from the beginning and kept rolling as the Mustangs tried to re-group. Golden Eagle goals were scored in the 3rd, 12th, 14th, 38th and 42nd minute. For a huge 5 - 0 Golden Eagle halftime lead. The Mustangs showed better in the second half but were unable to score and allowed LCCC to score another goal in the 69th minute. The final score was six to zero. This dropped the WWCC record to 2 wins, 2 losses and 2 ties. And drops the Mustang record in Region IX to 0 - 1 - 1.

Game Stats - Shots: WWCC 7, LCCC 19 - Keeper Saves: WWCC 5, LCCC 3 - Corner Kicks: WWCC 0, LCCC 4

Mustangs Play Extra Time Again

On Saturday at Crossroads Field in Rock Springs WY the WWCC Mustangs squared off with the Griffins of Westminster College. The team from Westminster College was their reserve team as Westminster is a 4 year college. Westminster College got on the board quickly as they scored in the 1st minute of the match after they linked several passes together to get past the WWCC defense. The stunned Mustangs fought back and scored in the 11th minute to tie up the match. The goal was scored when Brandon Bushman with the keeper behind him sent a square pass into the middle of the goal mouth where Joe Lake touched the ball into the empty net. The scored stayed tied at 1 at the half time break. Oscar Delgado made his first start in goal for the Mustangs and record 5 saves in the 1st half.

The second half was very similar to the first with two teams fighting hard to get opportunities to score. Both teams had a few looks but some missed hit balls and some awesome saves from both keepers kept the teams off the scoreboard in the second half.

So for the second match in as many days the Mustangs headed into overtime. The twenty minutes of overtime was enjoyable to watch as both teams stayed on the attack and missed some good chances. Joe Lake, Kyle Seljaas and Erick Mata all had good shots on the goal that were denied by the Griffins goal keeper in the extra periods. The second draw in a row leaves WWCC with a record of 2 wins, 1 loss and 2 ties.

Game Stats - Shots; WWCC 24, Westminster 20 - Saves; WWCC 11, Westminster 11 - Corner Kicks; WWCC 6, Westminster 9

Western Draws in First Region Game

On Friday in Rock Springs WY the Western Wyoming Mustangs battled the Cougars from Western Nebraska in the first Region IX men's soccer match of the season. This was a very intense and closely matched soccer game between the two rivals. WWCC was first on the scoreboard when they scored in the 44th minute. The goal came from a long California throw from Taylor Ford and Erick Mata was able to push it past the keeper into the side net with the outside of his right foot. WWCC took a 1 - 0 lead into the half time break.
Western Nebraska came out strong in the second half and evened the score in the 50th minute when the had the Mustangs outnumbered on a sideline and used some good passes to get the ball past Taylor Whetman. This goal ended Taylor Whetman's scoreless streak at 280 minutes. Both teams had some decent looks and chances but both teams came up with no more goals in regulation.
In NJCAA soccer when a regulation match is tied then the teams play two (10) minute overtime periods. It is sudden victory in overtime, meaning if a team scores then the match is over. In both overtime periods the Mustangs and Cougars battled pretty evenly and neither were able to find another goal. After 110 minutes of play the score was tied at 1 goal a piece. This was a great example of how good and intense a NJCAA college soccer match could be. The draws puts the Mustangs season mark at 2 wins 1 lose and 1 tie.

Game Stats - Shots: WWCC 21, WNCC 19 - Saves: WWCC 7, WNCC 12 - Corner Kicks; WWCC 7, WNCC 1.

Up Next for the Mustangs: Saturday 9/12 vs Westminster Reserves at Crossroads Field (Rock Springs WY) at 11:00am

Work Horse of the Match: Erick Mata (spark off the bench, played lots of minutes and scored the lone goal for WWCC)

One is Enough for WWCC

On Saturday in Cedar City Utah the Mustangs of WWCC squared off against the T-Birds of Southern Utah University. It was a game that WWCC controled for the vast majority of the match but were unable to put points on the board to put away the game. WWCC had 30 shots in the match, including 7 shots from Joe Lake. The SUU keepers were forced to make 18 saves. While the T-Birds were limited to only 8 shots in 90 minutes. And Taylor Whetman from WWCC saved 5 shots in 90 minutes. It was just one of those days finishing for the Mustangs as the seemed to be a little unlucky in the offensive third. The SUU keepers did make some good saves and the Mustangs did hit the woodwork on numerous times. However the lone goal of the match was scored by the Mustangs in the 31st minute. The goal was scored by Mika Goodman when he was fed a pass from Taylor Ford.
Even in the second half when tempers flared on both sides the WWCC defense was up to the task of SUU and kept them off of the scoreboard. Unfortunately WWCC was forced to play with 10 players for the final 15 minutes when one of their forwards was red carded. But they still held on for the one goal victory. This was Taylor Whetman's second shutout of the season as the keeper, and runs his shutout streak to 230 minutes of soccer. The Mustangs improve to 2 wins and a loss on the young 2009 season.
