8 - Running 9 - 80s on a match day in Arizona for not obeying all team rules (it was 90º at 7am)

6 - Playing well and so close against Northwest in Powell and LCCC in Rock Springs but still losing.
5 - Bus breakdowns - trips to St. George and Arizona.
4 - Watching, and singing along with Mulan.

Dennis Sellis ends career at Westminster

Dennis Sellis, a standout forward for the WWCC Mustangs during the 2007 season recently ended his collegiate playing career. Dennis Sellis lead the NJCAA in scoring and offensive points in 2007, while a Mustang. Sellis recorded 34 goals and 11 assists in his lone season at WWCC. Dennis transferred to Penn State after his freshman year at WWCC, Dennis took a redshirt year while at PSU and decided to get closer to home to end his collegiate career. Westminster College is where Sellis landed. He had a huge impact with the Griffins from Day 1. Dennis won several awards in his 3 years at Westminster for player of the week for the NAIA Frontier Conference. Sellis was also named to multiple All Conference teams and leaves his mark in the Westminster Record Book. Dennis has confirmed that he will try to continue his playing career at the professional level. We wish the former WWCC Mustang luck at his many USL tryouts and combines.

2011 Season Ends in Region Quarters

Four days after meeting the Western Nebraska CC Cougars in the season finale in Scottsbluff NE the WWCC Mustangs and the WNCC Cougars faced off in the Region IX Quarterfinals. The Mustangs the #4 seed in the Region hosted the match in Rock Springs WY. The Cougars got on the board first with 2 mistakes by the WWCC defense in the 1st half. One goal came when one WWCC defender stepped for off sides and the rest of the unit did not, allowing the WNCC to run free to the WWCC goal. The other first half goal was scored when a pass back from a defender did not reach the keeper and was intercepted by an one rushing WNCC player and doubled their lead. The score at the half was WNCC 2 - WWCC 0. WWCC stormed back valiantly in the second half. The Mustangs cut the lead in half when Steven Shelley headed home a pass into the WNCC net. The Cougars found an opening in a depleted WWCC defense and scored the insurance goal to take the final lead of 3 to 1.

The loss ended the WWCC season with an overall record of 10 wins and 9 losses. This ties the most wins in one season for the WWCC Mustangs. We are very proud of what the Mustangs were able to accomplish this season and the growth they gave to the program with their effort and talent.

WWCC Mustang Man of the Match - Steven Shelley, scored the lone goal for the Mustangs and played as hard as anyone on the pitch.

Mustangs Fall in Regular Season Finale

The 2011 regular season came to an end in Scottsbluff NE when the Cougars of Western Nebraska and the Mustangs of Western Wyoming faced off in a Region IX match. The Cougars got on the board first when a ball was headed in on a corner kick in the 7th minute. The WNCC lead of 1 - 0 lasted until the 33rd minute when Devin King was fouled in the penalty area and stepped up and scored on the penalty kick. The score at the half was even 1 - 1.
The second half saw more action and chances at each goal. WNCC scored their second goal in the 69th minute when the ball was crossed in front of the WWCC goal and it was kicked in by one of the Cougars. The Mustangs evened the score back up at 2 - 2 in the 75th minute. The Mustang scoring play started with a great pass to Angel Muniz who set up Jarom Stuart with a shot. The Stuart shot was blocked by the WNCC keeper and the rebound of the shot was out into the net by Steven Shelley. The tie was not long lived as WNCC scored off of a long shot, of around 25 yards, in the 78th minute. The Mustangs put pressure on the WNCC back line and keeper in the last 12 minutes but could not find their third and tying goal of the match. The final score was Cougars 3 - Mustangs 2. The loss puts the WWCC record at 10 wins, 8 losses and 0 ties for the regular season. The 1st round of the Region IX tournament is next for the Mustangs. They will be hosting Western Nebraska CC on Wednesday 10/19 at 4pm in Rock Springs.

Mustang Man of the Match: Taylor Chesnovar - Taylor played both a midfielder and a defender. He filled in where the team needed him and play very hard even when he was tired.

Mustangs Shutout the Pokes

In the penultimate match of the 2011 regular season the University of Wyoming Club team and the WWCC Mustangs faced each other in Laramie. WWCC controlled much of the match and possession and won the match but did not put very many goals in against the Cowboys. The scoring started in the 7th minute when Devin King collected a through ball and beat the keeper to notch his 10th goal of the season. The Cowboys were limited in their chances and the Mustangs could not finish theirs, so the match went into the break with the score WWCC 1 - UW 0.

The match seemed even more dominated by the Mustangs in the second half but again the Mustangs struggled to find the goal. The second goal of the match was scored when Devin King was fouled in the penalty box and Cameron Lowry stepped up and tattooed the spot kick past the UW keeper in the 47th minute. That would be the scoring for the match for both teams. The win brings the Mustangs up to a 10 - 7 - 0 record. The 10 wins in a season tie the WWCC Men's season record for wins and the win today guarantees that the Mustangs will have a winning season.

#17 LCCC Downs the Mustangs

The Region IX rivarly between the LCCC Golden Eagles and the WWCC Mustangs had their second match on Wednesday in Cheyenne WY. The wind of the capitol city of WY dictated a lot of the play in the first half. LCCC had the wind at their back for the first 45 minutes and used it to their advantage. The first goal of the match came in the 12th minute when a low hard driven shot beat Cory Thibeault in the bottom right corner. WWCC played fairly well despite the wind and a top flight opponent. Taylor Chesnovar and Devin King both had good shots against the Golden Eagles in the first half. In the 42nd minute the Eagles were able to sneak another shot into the WWCC net and took a 2 - 0 halftime lead.

The wind was not as much of a factor in the match during the second half and the Mustangs came out of halftime determined to get back in the match and push their rivals into a tight match. It looked as if WWCC would get into the match when they scores their lone goal of the match in the 60th minute. Angel Muniz started the scoring play when he sent a quick ball from the left hand side of the field to the right and a wide open Taylor Egbert. Taylor beat the keeper and brought the Mustangs to within one of the LCCC team. The goal was Taylor's 11th tally of the season. That was as close as the Mustangs would come. The Golden Eagles would add scores in the 75th, 78th and 81st minute. The final score would be 5 - 1 in favor of LCCC. The final score was not indicative of how close most of the match was. The WWCC overall record is now 9 - 7 - 0 and 4 - 5 - 0 in Region IX play.

Mustang Man of the Match: Mitch Cooper and Coleman Hayduk. Mitch and Coleman entered the match in the first half as part of the "wrecking crew" line and helped bring energy and physicality to the WWCC Mustangs in the match.

NIC not Nice for WWCC

Saturday October 8^th in Coeur d ‘Alene ID the Mustangs renewed their rivalry with their neighbor Region 18 opponent the North Idaho College Cardinals. WWCC and NIC have played each other every year of WWCC existence. The field condition in Couer d’ Alene was not ideal, as the area had received rain every day for a week. This was a rematch of a match about 3 weeks earlier when the Mustangs bested the Cardinals 4 -2 in Rock Springs. The Cardinals got on the board first as they scored in the 6^th minute of play. The score was created when a NIC cross was sent in, ricocheted of the post and the NIC players bicycled kicked the ball into the net. The sloppy conditions lead to sloppy play as both teams were unable to get good locks at the goal and settled for bad passes and several players falling down on the pitch. The lone Cardinals score was the only score of the first half and the lead after 45 minutes of play was NIC 1 – WWCC 0.

The second half was better soccer from the Mustangs but the long bus rides of the week and the sloppy pitch made it hard for the Mustangs to show their true skills on the day. In the 52^nd minute the Cardinals put the icing on the cake when they scored their second goal off of a nice long diagonal cross to a wing player who shot a high ball that just went over our keepers hand and just under the bar. The Mustangs were able to outshoot the Cardinals on the day but did not do a good job of breaking down the NIC defense and finding spaces in the corners or behind their back four. The final score was NIC 2 – WWCC 0. The loss brings the WWCC record down to 9 – 6 – 0.

Rattlers best the Mustangs again

On Wednesday night in La Junta CO the Rattlers of Otero Junior College and the Mustangs of Western Wyoming played in a classic Region IX match for supremacy of the region. The match was played with high wind gusts to one end of the field and the Mustangs had the wind at their back for the first 45 minutes. Even with the wind advantage the Rattlers were able to score first in the 14^th minute when a long through ball was found at a OJC player’s foot towards the top left of the box and kicked past the WWCC keeper Cory Thibeault. The Mustangs answered quickly to even the score at 1 goal a piece in the 16^th minute. Jarom Stuart headed a ball into the area in front of the goal and Angel Muniz was able to kick it in. The Mustangs had a lot more chances in the 1^st half but did not capitalize on the wind and went into the halftime tied with the #10 NJCAA team.

The second half the Mustangs knew they would have to face the wind and a good team, they knew they would have to play some solid defense to keep the Rattlers off of the board. The Mustangs were able throughout the second half to have some offense even though they had the wind in their face. However in the 65^th minute of the match the Rattlers kicked a ball into the WWCC box that took a funny bounce from the turf and wind and their players blasted it into the net. The Mustangs nearly tied the match when Andrew Newbold hit a long cross towards the net but was saved by the fingertips of the OJC keeper. With minutes to play in the match the Mustangs took a gamble and subbed off a defender to add another forward to try to tie the match. The gamble did not pay off as the now outnumbered defenders were beaten and the Rattlers scored an insurance goal in the 88^th minute of play. The Mustangs did continue to push and try to score with the remaining time left but were not able to get a score in the time remaining. The loss drops the Mustangs to a 9 – 5 – 0 record overall and a 4 – 4 – 0 record in Region IX. The Mustangs sit in the 4^th seed spot for Region IX with a week and a half to go in regular season Region IX play.

Mustang Offense Explodes versus Cowboys

On Saturday at Crossroads Park the University of Wyoming Club team visited Rock Springs WY for the first time. The offense started early and ended with a bang also. The first 2 goals were scored in the 8th minute. The first goal as scored by Taylor Egbert as he hit the shot towards the keeper who could not keep the ball out of the goal. Seconds later Mitch Christensen sent a ball to Nate Sellis who scored his first goal of the season. In the 13th minute Jarom Stuart pounded a nice cross from Andrew Newbold into the net for his 3rd goal of the season. The scoring would stop there in the first half for both teams. WWCC was able to get everyone on their bench into the match for both halves. The halftime score was WWCC 3 - UW 0.
The second half started as slow in the offensive category as the first half ended. It was not until the 72nd minute that Andrew Newbold scored his goal in the match. Eight minutes later in the 80th minute Kortny Lancaster sent in a nice set piece ball that Steven Shelley used his knee to put it into the back of the net. The 82nd minute saw the Cowboys score off of a corner kick to get the score to 5 - 1. The Mustangs were starting to roll offensively and kept the scoring going in the latter minutes of the match. Devin King collected a nice pass from Nate Sellis and got in the score book in the 84th minute. Moments after the goal from King, Taylor Egbert collected a ball and sent it back to Cody Nice who sent the ball over the Cowboy's keeper and into the net from about 35 yards out. The final goal came with about 20 seconds to play as Taylor Egbert dribbled around the Cowboy's keeper and into the net. The win breaks the Mustangs short 2 match losing streak and brings their record up to 9 - 4 - 0. This was the last regular season match in Rock Springs for the Mustangs this season, WWCC hosts the Region IX tournament this season. The record of the Mustangs in Rock Springs this season so far is 7 - 2 - 0.

LCCC One better than the Mustangs Today

On Friday at Crossroads Field the WWCC Mustangs and their oldest rival the LCCC Golden Eagles played a classic Region IX men's soccer match. The match was played at a good pace and saw lots of action but few goals. The LCCC Golden Eagles came into the match ranked as the #16 team in the latest NJCAA poll and having defeated the #1 team in the country 5 days earlier. WWCC managed 6 shots in the first half including several right in the first minutes of play. LCCC did have 10 shots in the first half and WWCC keeper Cory Thibeault made 3 outstanding saves to keep the match tied 0 - 0 at the half.
In the second half again the teams were evenly matched for around 18 minutes until a red card changed the match. WWCC's Cameron Lowry was given the red card in the 68th minute and the team had to play the remaining 22 minutes of the match down a man. The Golden Eagles took quick advantage of the situation as they scored in the 70th minute of play. Their goal came as a long kick bounced and the LCCC forward was able to beat Cory Thibeault by a split second to the ball and pushed it to the goal, sadly for WWCC, Cory Thibeault was also injured on the play. So, with 20 minutes to play down a man and a goal the Mustangs tried to get back into the match. Even down a man they were able to find 4 shots within close range to try to even the score. But to the home teams chagrin all of their chances sailed just wide of the net. The final score to the match was WWCC 0 - LCCC 1. The overall record of the Mustangs is now 8 - 4 - 0 and 4 - 3 - 0 in Region IX play.

6 Game Winning Streak Snapped by Trappers

On Wednesday in Powell WY the WWCC Mustangs renewed their Region IX rivalry with the Northwest College Trappers. This was another great Region IX match up between 2 fairly evenly matched teams. Northwest College won the coin toss to begin the match and elected to have the wind at their back for the first half. WWCC had only a handful of chances in the first half fighting against the wind and had to play a lot of defense. The defense and Cory Thibeault in goal were strong but eventually the Trappers found a whole and blasted a shot in the upper right of the goal in the 25th minute of play. That goal was the only goal of the first half. The halftime score was WWCC 0 - NWC 1.

The second half the Mustangs had the advantage of the wind, however the wind was dying down the later the evening progressed. The tables turned and the Mustangs played much more offense on the second half, however the second goal of the match was scored by the Trappers when they found space on a counter attack on the right side and their wing placed a beautiful shot around the keeper and into the side netting, this goal was in the 70th minute of play. The Mustangs kept fighting and got on the scoreboard seconds after conceding a goal. Angel Muniz sent a nice pass to Andrew Newbold who chipped the Trapper's keeper and brought WWCC to within 1 goal. The last 20 minutes of the match were played at a furious pace and saw several Mustangs have great chances at the goal including Taylor Egbert, Angel Muniz, Jarom Stuart and Devin King. Unfortunately for WWCC the were unable to find their 2nd goal of the match to tie it up. The final score was WWCC 1 - NWC 2. This was the Mustangs first loss since September 10th in Prescott AZ, the Mustangs had won 6 straight matches. This was also the first match the Mustangs had lost to a team that was not ranked in the NJCAA polls. The Mustangs record drops to 8 - 3 - 0 on the season and 4 - 2 - 0 in Region IX play.

Mustangs Win Wild Shootout against Western Nebraska

On Saturday in Rock Springs WY the Western Nebraska Community College Cougars and the Western Wyoming Community College Mustangs faced off in a Region IX match-up. Goals were scored early and often in this match. Western Nebraska got on the board with the first 2 goals by scoring in the 9th minute on a wonderful shot and in the 11th minute off of a bad clear from the WWCC defense. The Mustangs responded with a goal in the 27th minute when Andrew Newbold received a pass from Nathaniel Sellis and hit a low driven ball for the Mustang's first goal. Just 30 seconds later the Cougars answered with another goal to up their lead to 3 - 1. A bad pass from the Cougar's back line gave Taylor Egbert of the Mustangs a ball at his feet which he hit hard and to the upper right into the net. The scoring was done for the first half with a score of Western Nebraska 3 - Western Wyoming 2.

The second half was a reversal of fortunes for the scoring for both teams. WWCC evened the match in the 55th minute when Angel Muniz sent a high ball into the box and Devin King headed it into the goal. Five minutes later the Mustangs took their first lead of the match when Spencer Mohlman threaded a pass to Andrew Newbold for his 2nd goal of the match. Another 5 minutes later in the 65th minute Steven Shelly sent a ball to the feet of Andrew Newbold to complete his hat trick. This is the first hat trick for a WWCC Mustang this season. The Newbold hat trick raised the WWCC lead to 5 - 3. The Cougars of WNCC still played hard and aggressive and scored 2 goals to even the score. Their fourth and fifth goal were scored in the 73rd minute and the 74th minute. The 2 teams exchanged chances and possession for the last 16 minutes of regulation but no goals. The score at the end of regulation was WWCC 5 - WNCC 5.

In NJCAA soccer, an overtime is played which consists of two 10 minute periods and a sudden victory rule, meaning first team to score wins. The first 10 minutes of overtime both teams had some chances at their opposition's net but the Cougars had better chances. Thanks to a hard working defense for the Mustangs and some timely saves from Luis Trevisan no goals were scored in the first overtime. In the second overtime the Mustangs took more control of the match and had some great chances to score including some near misses. In the 108th minute a ball was sent to Andrew Newbold who collected it in the offensive third and sent it to a sprinting Devin King. King beat the keeper to the ball and had the game winning goal for the Mustangs with 2:05 left before the teams would have tied. The exciting overtime win extends the WWCC winning streak to 6 matches and improves their record to 8 - 2 - 0 and 4 - 1 - 0 in Region IX play.

Mustangs Double Up Cardinals

On a beautiful fall Friday in Rock Springs WY the
North Idaho College Cardinals and the Western
Wyoming Community College Mustangs renewed their annual rivalry. The Mustangs got on the board first when in the 10th minute Jarom Stuart passed back a pass to Mitch Christensen who bent the ball to the upper right goal and past the NIC keeper. The match was evened up in the 16th minute when an own goal was allowed by the WWCC defense and keeper. WWCC took the lead for good when Andrew Newbold passed a ball to the feet of Taylor Chesnovar who placed the ball in the left side netting in the 25th minute. Shortly after the 2nd goal for the Mustangs the starting keeper Cory Thibeault was injured after a collision and Luis Trevisan had to play the rest of the match. The half time score was WWCC 2 and NIC 1.

Some good adjustments were made by the Mustangs to continue to put pressure on the NIC defense and to keep them from scoring. In the 47th minute Angel Muniz scored his first goal of the season after receiving a Jarom Stuart pass. Angel kicked the ball under the diving NIC keeper and into the net. The Mustangs had more chances in the second half but their last goal came in the 64th minute after a foul against NIC around 25 yards from goal. Spencer Mohlman stepped up to the kick and tattooed the ball into the top right corner for the Mustang's 4th goal of the match. In the 75th minute the Cardinals were able to get past the WWCC defense and keeper Luis Trevisan but their lone second half goal still left NIC behind by 2 goals. The final score was WWCC 4 and NIC 2. This is the biggest margin of victory for the Mustangs against the Cardinals in the series and also the most goals allowed by the Cardinals in the series. The 5th win in a row for the Mustangs puts their record to 7 - 2 - 0.

WWCC Gets 1st Region Road Win Since 2009

On Wednesday in Sterling Colorado the Plainsmen of Northeastern Junior College and the Mustangs of Western Wyoming Community College played for the 2nd time of the season. The first half saw the Mustangs have a lot of control and shots but no goals. Taylor Egbert did hit one shot off of the crossbar. WWCC outshot NJC 11 - 3 in the 1st half but the halftime score was 0 - 0.

In the second half the Mustangs cleaned up a lot in the offensive third of the field and scored 4 goals. The first goal was from Taylor Egbert in the 57th minute, the Egbert goal was assisted from Jarom Stuart. The 71st minute saw the 2nd Mustang goal when Andrew Newbold got a square pass from Logan Anderson and Newbold pushed the ball past the Plainsmen keeper for the goal. Six minutes later Taylor Egbert got his 2nd goal of the match when he kicked a 25 yard free kick into the top left corner. The last Mustang goal was also unassisted, when in the 85th minute when Logan Anderson drew a foul in the penalty area and also converted the penalty kick. Sadly, the WWCC defense and keeper, Cory Thibeault, could not keep the shutout as the NJC Plainsmen were able to put in a blocked shot in the 90th minute. The final score was 4 - 1. The win brings the WWCC record to 6 - 2 - 0 and 3 - 1 - 0 in Region IX play.

Tiger Turf Good for the Mustangs Again

On Saturday in Rock Springs WY at the Rock Springs High School Football Stadium the Mustangs of WWCC and the Griffins of Westminster JV played for the second time in the year. The first matchup was the Mustang's second scrimmage and was played in Salt Lake City. The Mustangs came out of the gates very quickly and scored a goal in the 1st minute (:20 seconds). This is the fastest goal scored by the Mustangs in their 7 year existence. The goal came as Devin King crossed the ball and Steven Shelley headed the ball past the goal line and the keeper. With the wind at their backs the Mustangs controlled the play and the possession for long stretches of the 1st half. The second goal for the Mustangs came in the 36th minute when Steven Shelley throw in the ball from the sideline and Efren Carrillo was able to flick it towards the back post and Mitch Christensen pushed it into the net. The score at the half time was WWCC 2 - Westminster JV 0.

The second half still saw the Mustangs control the match but with much less shots on goal and offensive potency. The lone goal in the second half came as the center official viewed that a Westminster player was fouled within the penalty box. Cory Thibeault tried to save the kick but was unsuccessful and the Griffins got on the board with a goal in the 58th minute. The WWCC defense did not commit another foul in the box and did not allow the Griffins any real chances at the goal throughout 90 minute. Even into the wind the majority of the second half was played in the Griffin's half of the field. The final score was WWCC 2 - Westminster 1. The win helps the Mustangs to reach a 5 - 2 - 0 mark on the 2011 season.

On Friday at crossroads field in Rock Springs WY, the Northwest Kansas Technical College Mavericks squared off against the WWCC Mustangs. This is NWKTC's first season with a men's soccer team, so this was the first time for these two schools to square off on the pitch. The first half saw some good soccer and lots of passion from both sides. However neither team was able to get on the board and both teams went into the half tied 0 - 0.

The Mustangs exploded offensively in the second half while still playing great defense. Mitch Christensen starting the scoring with a 20 yard blast that went past the keeper towards the top right corner of the net. Mitch's goal was assisted by Angel Muniz. Devin King continued his hot play by scoring 2 goals in the match with assists from Jarom Stuart and Angel Muniz. Taylor Egbert was the 3rd scorer for the Mustangs, Egbert's goal was from a nice pass by Nate Sellis. Cory Thibeault and the WWCC defense earned their first shutout of the season holding the Mavericks to zero goals. The win puts the Mustang's record up to 4 - 2 - 0, and the win is the Mustang's second in a row.

WWCC Posts 1st ever win in AZ

On Monday in Phoenix Arizona the Pumas of Paradise Valley Community College hosted the WWCC Mustangs. This was another first meeting on the pitch between these two teams. In about 95 degree weather the Mustangs got on the scoreboard first and often in the initial 45 minutes. The first goal was Steven Shelley assisted by Angel Muniz in the 13th minute. Seven minutes later Devin King doubled the Mustang lead on his goal with an assist from Spencer Mohlman. PVCC stormed back and cut the WWCC lead to 2 - 1 with a through ball goal in the 28th minute. WWCC finished the 1st half strong with an additional 2 goals. Devin King scored his second goal in the 32nd minute off of another assist from Spencer Mohlman. Jarom Stuart finished off the 1st half scoring in the 38th minute when Devin King set him up with a nice pass that Jarom was able to place past the PVCC keeper. The half time lead was WWCC 4 - PVCC 1.

The second half started as well for WWCC as the first half ended. Andrew Newbold received a diagonal through ball from Taylor Egbert in the 47th minute and Newbold belted it past the keeper to extend the lead to a staggering 5 - 1. PVCC had to play more offensively to try to get back in the match and they did. The Pumas scored in the 50th minute, the 71st minute and again in the 73rd minute. The score was 5 - 4 with 17 minutes left to go in the match. The WWCC defense stiffened, the midfield worked hard and the forwards kept possession to kill the clock and the WWCC Mustangs escaped with a 5 - 4 victory, their first win in AZ and their first win against a Region 1 (AZ team). Luis Trevisan was the starter in goal and played the entire 90 minutes to get his first win of the season. The road victory brings the Mustangs up to a 3 -2 - 0 record and still with a 2 - 1 - 0 Region IX record.

Mustangs travel to Historic Match vs Yavapai CC

On Saturday at Prescott Arizona the WWCC Mustangs were pitted against the Roughriders of Yavapai Community College. This was the first match up between these two programs. Yavapai is the most decorated team in NJCAA history. Having competed at 22 of the 23 NJCAA national tournaments and having won 7 National Titles. The WWCC Mustangs were excited to show what it could do against a top notch program like Yavapai on their home pitch. The currently ranked #6 team in the NJCAA polls scored quickly and often on the Mustangs. WWCC played way too much defense and allowed some quick and easy goals against the Rough riders. Yavapai scored twice in the first 7 minutes. The Mustangs scored their lone goal in the first half when Devin King crossed the ball to Taylor Egbert to placed it into the bottom left corner. Yavapai kept rolling and WWCC could not keep the momentum after pulling within 2 - 1. The Roughriders scored 5 more goals in the 1st half for a huge 7 - 1 lead. Starting keeper Luis Trevisan played very hard in the first half but was unable to stop the onslaught.

After a good halftime talk and a change at keeper the Mustangs played better and proved that they had the skills to compete with a team the quality of Yavapai. However the Roughriders added 2 more goals to put the icing on the cake for a commanding 9 - 1 victory. Defender Logan Anderson was asked to mind the goal in the second half as our other goal keeper Cory Thibeault was ill for the match. The loss drops the Mustangs to a 2 - 2 - 0 record. Both losses have come from teams that were in the top 10 of the NJCAA poll.

WWCC Mustangs score 2nd win of the young season

On Wednesday in Rock Springs WY the WWCC Mustangs squared off against their newest Region IX rival the Plainsmen of Northeast Junior College of Sterling CO. This was the first ever meeting between these 2 teams. The Mustangs dominated the run of play in the 1st half and possession of the ball. WWCC peppered the goal of the Plainsmen in the first 45 minutes, WWCC out shot NJC 16 - 1 in the first half. The only goal of the 1st half came when Jarom Stuart feed Taylor Egbert a nice ball and Taylor beat the NJC keeper, WWCC took the lead in the 20th minute. The score at the end of the half was WWCC 1 - NJC 0.
The second half was much more even in possesion and shots, however it was apparent that WWCC had more talent and outclassed NJC in most aspects on the field. WWCC added 2 goals for insurance in the 71st minute by Devin King, assisted by Taylor Egbert and in the 78th minute by Taylor Egbert, assisted by Andrew Newbold. NJC did fight throughout the match and added a goal in the 88th minute. The win brings WWCC's record to 2 - 1 - 0 with the same record in Region IX play.

Mustangs fall to #7 Rattlers in Rock Springs

On Friday at Crossroads Park in Rock Springs the WWCC Mustangs played against the Otero Junior College Rattlers from La Junta CO in a Region IX match up. The Rattlers got off to a fast start with a couple of scoring opportunities in the opening minutes. The WWCC team calmed down and played fairly evenly with OJC for stretches of the 1st half. In the 26th minute the Rattlers found a crease in the defense and squeaked a shot past WWCC keeper Cory Thibeault. Forty seconds later OJC took the ball down the end line and bent a ball around the keeper and into the side netting. Otero took a 2 - 0 lead into the half.

The Mustangs never stopped fighting and trying to get in the match however they could not connect with very many passes in a row, especially in the attacking third of the field. Otero added an insurance goal in the 75th minute off of a corner kick that dropped to an Otero player's feet. Otero did create more chances at the goal. WWCC was able to get most of their shots off of long set pieces that were blown by the wind into the OJC keeper's hand. The final score of the match was OJC 3 - WWCC 0. This drops the Mustangs to a 1 - 1 - 0 record overall and the same record in Region IX. Otero Junior College were the Region IX regular season and tournament champions last season, along with making it to the NJCAA National Tournament. Currently OJC is ranked #7 by the NJCAA polls.

WWCC Opens Season with a Region WIn

On Wednesday in Rock Springs the WWCC Mustangs defeated the Northwest College Trappers in the opening match for the Mustangs and the first Region IX match for both teams. The final score was WWCC 2 - NWC 1. The match was originally scheduled to be played at 5pm at Crossroads Field. The match and the women's match before were delayed several times earlier in the afternoon as there were several lightning strikes in the vicinity. The matches were postponed and moved to the Rock Springs High School field. The men's match was to start at 8pm however due to another lightning delay and the women's match going into overtime the match did not get started until 8:45pm.

The match started at a furious pace and the Mustangs were first on the board when Taylor Egbert ran onto a bouncing ball from around 25 yards out and with his right foot shot it over and past the NWC keeper in the 12th minute. The first 20 minutes of the match were fairly evenly played however the momentum changed to the hand of the Trappers after their score to even the score in the 28th minute. The remainder of the second half the Trapper controlled the rest of the half and due to some great goal keeping from Cory Thibeault and the WWCC defense the Trappers would not score again. The half time score was even 1 - 1.

The Mustangs made adjustments from the half and it helped them to take back the momentum of the match and possession of the ball. The Mustangs were fouled just inside their attacking half of the field and Spencer Mohlman took the free kick and placed it onto the head of a leaping Jarom Stuart how redirected it to the top right corner of the goal in the 70th minute. WWCC's defense (Carson Broadhead, Spencer Mohlman, Logan Anderson, Cody Nice and Chad Englert) and keeper Cory Thibeault limited the Trappers to 4 shots in the second half and only 2 shots on goal. The final score of the match stood after 90 minutes at WWCC 2 - NWC 1. The win moves the WWCC Mustang's 2011 record to 1 - 0 - 0, the 3rd year in a row that WWCC has started 1 - 0 - 0.

Scrimmage Season Over for Mustangs

At the Boise Soccer Club in Boise Idaho WWCC faced off against the Yotes of the College of Idaho in the Mustang’s 4^th and final scrimmage of the 2011 season. The College of Idaho is a 4-year NAIA school. The weather was quite a bit cooler from the day before but the Mustangs still continued to play some great soccer. The scoring for the scrimmage started when a C of I player dummied a ball and another Yote ran onto the ball and beat Cory Thibeault for a goal in the 26^th minute. WWCC equalized the match in the 39^th minute when Taylor Egbert sent a pass to Andrew Newbold who then blasted it past the C of I keeper. This was Andrew’s second goal during the exhibition season. The score remained tied at the half 1 – 1. WWCC continued to play well but struggled to finish very many of their chances. All of the scoring in the second half was from the Yotes. Their second goal came in the 47^th minute when a pass come centered from a sideline and was placed well by the WWCC keeper Luis Trevisan. The final goal of the scrimmage was also from the Yotes in the 65^th minute from a long shot of about 25 yards out again beat the WWCC keeper. The Mustangs continued to fight and string many passes together as they advanced the ball down the field towards the C of I goal. The whistle blew with the final scrimmage score 3 – 1.

3rd Scrimmage in Oregon

On Friday afternoon in Ontario OR the Treasure Valley Chukars and the Western Wyoming Mustangs squared off in an exhibition or scrimmage match. The day was 104˚ and the Mustangs played almost as hot on the field as the temperature. The only thing missing for the Mustangs on the day was finishing with the ball in the net. The Mustangs had a handful of shots ping off of the posts and crossbars. Along with several missed kicks right in front of the goal and some good keeper saves from TVCC. The scrimmage was tied 0 – 0 at the halftime. The Mustangs controlled most of the play and possession but unfortunately the TVCC Chukars got a free kick from around 25 yards out with 5 minutes remaining on the scrimmage. The free kick found its way towards the back post of WWCC goal and was kicked by a TVCC to the near post and past the WWCC keeper. The Mustangs did not give up and had 5 shots in the last 5 minutes of the scrimmage, including 3 shots on goal to try to tie the scrimmage.

Here is the travel info for this weekend's scrimmages at Treasure Valley CC and College of Idaho. Friday's scrimmage is at Ontario OR against the Chukars of Treasure Valley CC at 4:15pm. As far as we know Treasure Valley plays their home matches on campus (650 College Blvd., in truth, College Blvd. doesn't show up on city street signs. Second Scrimmage at Westminster

On Saturday in Salt Lake City UT at the Westminster campus the WWCC Mustangs had their second scrimmage of the 2011 season against the Westminster Griffin JV team. It was the second scrimmage match for the Mustangs in as many days and their expectations were high to continue to play at a high level. WWCC got on the scoreboard first when in the 14th minute Cameron Lowry took a long throw in that Andrew Newbold kicked past the keeper with his left foot. The Griffins had the rest of the scoring for the half and the scrimmage after this point. Westminster scored in the 30th, 39th and 41st minute to put the Mustangs in a big whole at the halftime break.

The second half the Mustangs played better but were a little unlucky to not get on the scoreboard and were unlucky when Westminster scored the only goal of the second half off of a poor goal kick that gave the Griffins a 1 on 1 situation, which they scored in the 70th minute. The Mustangs did out shoot the Griffins 11 to 5 in the second half.

Twenty three of the Mustangs played in the match, all except for Steven Shelley and Logan Anderson who were nursing injuries. The following players got their first start of the season; Chad Englert, Angel Muniz, Mitch Christensen, Andrew Newbold and Cory Thibeault.

First Scrimmage of 2011 in Dixie

The WWCC Mustangs kicked off their pre-season or scrimmage schedule against the NCAA Division II Dixie State Red Storm in St. George UT on Friday August 19th. This was the second year in a row that the Red Storm and the Mustangs squared off in an exhibition. The Red Storm showed their experience and the speed of their play by dominating big portions of the match and the majority of the 1st half. The Red Storm were able to score 4 goals in the first half while the Mustangs were not able to get a shot off during the first 45 minutes. The second half saw the Mustangs settle down and play better soccer and play up to the same level as their opponent. Dixie State scored the first goal in the second half off of a set piece. Western was able to not only play better in the second half but to score 2 goals. The first Mustang goal came off of a free kick at the half field line sent into the 18 yard box from Kortny Lancaster. The ball was then flicked back towards the goal by a Red Storm defender and past the Dixie State goal keeper for an own goal, this goal happened in the 67th minute of play. In the 88th minute of play Devin King controlled the ball in the DSC penalty area and was fouled. Devin stepped up to the 12 yard spot and beat the keeper on the penalty kick to the bottom left corner. Seventeen Mustangs saw their first collegiate action during this scrimmage; Luis Trevisan, Taylor Egbert, Carson Broadhead, Cody Nice, Logan Anderson, Jarom Stuart, Taylor Chesnovar, Chad Englert, Raul Mata, Mitch Cooper, Kortny Lancaster, Andrew Newbold, Coleman Hayduk, Christian Mendoza, Hideo McOmber, Cory Thibeault and Efren Carrillo.

The 2011 version of the WWCC Mustangs are ending their 2-a-day camp and ready for the scrimmage part of their schedule. The team leaves Thursday to play on Friday in St. George and on Saturday in Salt Lake City. The first scrimmage will be versus Dixie State at 9am in the stadium on the DSU campus. The second scrimmage will be versus the Westminster Reserves at 12pm on the soccer field/lacrosse field on their campus. We have high hopes and expectations for what this group of young men can accomplish.

Procedure for move-ins – Saturday Aug. 6th

Those Living in the Dorms - Will need to stop into Resident Assistants Desk at Rocky Mountain Hall (dorm on campus). The Housing Department will have your dorm room information there, tell them that you are a member of the men’s soccer team and they will get you set to move in. You can stop by Rocky Mountain Hall between 12:30pm - 1:30pm on Saturday August 6th. Those not Living in the Dorms – You are not required to be on campus during move-in times but can come up to the college and help your teammates to move in, if you wish. However, you need to be at all other meetings, physicals and practice etc... on Saturday.

Team Physicals - Everyone needs to be to the physicals at 1:30pm at the Rushmore Gymnasium on the South end of the WWCC Campus. The physicals will be done in the men's locker room and in the gymnasium itself.

WWCC Media Day - After you are finished with the physicals there will be pictures and members of the media for interviews. This will be from 2:00pm - 3:00pm for the men's soccer team. Some of the interviews will be in person and some will be via phone etc... These will be in the WWCC Gym and in the WWCC Team Room. Those who gave me their cell phone number for their local paper - remember to bring your cell phone.

Team Meeting - There will be a team meeting on Saturday at 6:00pm in the WWCC Team Room (by the WWCC Rushmore Gymnasium). This meeting will be our chance to introduce ourselves and for the coaching staff to introduce our expectations to you for practice.

Team Scrimmage – There will be a team scrimmage on Saturday at 7:00 pm on the WWCC Campus field (south end of campus underneath the big light blue water tower). Friends and family are welcome to stay and watch.

Paperwork needed for first two weeks – August 6th – August 22nd

Physicals – Remember this will be done on August 6th in Rock Springs. They will be paid for by WWCC.

Financial Aid - If you have not signed and turned in your letters of intent or other financial papers please do so and turn them in as soon as possible. (Remember National Letters of Intent are timed documents and need to be turned in quickly) You can bring them to WWCC on Monday and turn them into room #1004. I will be checking with the Financial Aid office during our first week to see what they need from each player.

Insurance - If you have not already completed and mailed back all of your insurance forms you will not be able to participate until at least Monday. If you have not yet mailed them in you will have to turn those in at the Athletic Office, room #3011. Those turning in their paperwork on Monday will need to get a note from the athletics secretary, Debi Monroe, that you are able to practice. If your paperwork is not turned in, then you will not be practicing until it is all completed and turned in. The athletic office is not open on Saturday August 6th so you have to send in your insurance info before you arrive if you want to participate in the team scrimmage of Saturday August 6th.

Frequently Asked Questions for moving in and First 2 weeks
Housing during our first two weeks – The school will pay for the housing during this time. There will be no additional charges for staying on campus during this time. You will be living in the dorm room that you have been assigned for the rest of the season with your roommates for the year.

Food during our first two weeks – The college will also pay for three meals a day, starting on Monday August 8th. There will not be an additional charge for eating at the cafeteria during this time. You will have to eat at the appointed team meal times to get the meals. You might want to bring some money for snacks beyond that which the college will provide. Also, the cafeteria is not open before school starts and on Sundays so bring money to pay for meals that day. The athletic teams are trying to plan a meal for August 6th and also August 7th but there are a couple of meals there that the players need to plan on taking care of.

Equipment needed for practices - Remember to bring soccer cleats, shin guards, soccer socks, several pairs of work-out clothes both warm and cool weather, tennis shoes and a water bottle/container. We have ordered practice gear for the team but it may not arrive here before 8/6 and you will want other work-out clothes since we will train two or three times a day. I would request that all players bring their swimming suits as we may do some swimming/training in the water.

Team Scrimmage - Will be held on Saturday August 6th at 7pm - 9pm at the WWCC Campus field.

First practice – Will be held at 9:00 am – 11:30 am on Monday August 9th at Crossroads Field (Our home field). We will begin with a fitness test. We will use the bulk on this first practice to work on ball skills, touches conditioning etc... Like almost all practices we will finish with some additional conditioning. And we will also have an additional keeper practice at the end of the field players practice.

Additional Items needed – Bring all the items you will need for college. We do have our first three Sundays off before school starts. For some this may be long enough to go home and get additional items they left behind but for others it may not be a long enough break so bring all of the items necessary for your dorm and essential college life.

What you can expect from practices? – I firmly believe that to get better you must include the soccer ball in your training. But, I also know that we need to be in game shape as soon as possible. We will condition every practice, we will lift weights, we will do plyos and speed training. We will also get touches on the ball every practice. We will run sprints every practice, if you do not come to WWCC in shape you will struggle! You need to do all of your summer work-out program or the first week or two of practice will be painful for you and it might cost you playing time in our first games, which I will use to determine a set starting line-up and a substitution rotation.

What if your paperwork is not completed or only half done? – If any of your athletic paperwork (physicals, insurance etc…) is not completely done you will have to get it finished before you can practice. All other paperwork needs to be finished before you are eligible to play in a scrimmage or a match.

WWCC Mustangs Got it Done in the Classroom

The Western Wyoming Mustangs received notice that their team GPA for the spring 2011 semester was 2.99. This was the best team GPA in the history of the WWCC Men's Soccer team. Unfortunately we will not be awarded an Academic All American team since it is required to have a team GPA higher than 3.0 to achieve that accomplishment. However we were the 6th highest Men's soccer team in nation. This is great turn around from the first semester. All the spring 2011 Men's soccer players should be congratulated. And in the fall 2011 lets do a little bit better so that we can officially be recognized. There is no reason to not be the top Academic team in all of NJCAA.

Cory Thibeault a Keeper for the Mustangs

Cory Thibeault a senior from Stansbury High in Utah has signed a National Letter of Intent to play goal keeper for WWCC. Cory was a 3 time Utah ODP player, he was also a starting varsity keeper at Juan Diego Catholic High his freshman year. Cory played defense for Stansbury High but also trained as a keeper with Tooele County United and the RSL Development Youth team. Cory is about 5'10" and a good frame for a keeper. He will challenge right away for playing time and a starting role. Congrats to Cory.

Second Copper Hills Player to WWCC

Andrew Newbold has committed to play for the Western Wyoming Community College Men's Soccer team for the 2011 Fall season. Andrew is a tall and fast forward that had an excellent spring season for his high school team. Andrew scored 14 goals his senior, he led his team in goal in 2011. For his high school career Andrew scored 18 varsity goals. Newbold was an honorable mention 5A All-state Forward in 2011. Andrew also has some versatility in his playing position as he has also played as an outside midfielder. Andrew is a welcome addition to the Mustangs as we expect him to be a big part of our offense this season. Andrew is shown in the white kit on the left.

A Nevada Star to Shine at WWCC

Jarom Stuart from Desert Oasis High School in Las Vegas Nevada has been awarded a scholarship to play forward at Western Wyoming Community College. Jarom has been a high scoring forward whether it be in Nevada for a high school or a club, or even when he lived and played in Utah high school and club teams. Jarom leaves Desert Oasis High as their leading scorer in their high school's history. He was the leading scorer during his sophomore year for club teams in Utah. We expect Jarom to step onto campus and be the type of player to challenge for a lot of playing time and possibly even a starting position. Jarom is a player off the pitch of the highest quality and we are happy to have him join us this fall.

Hideo McOmber joins the Mustangs

Hideo McOmber a defender from Bountiful UT and Bountiful High School has committed to be a WWCC Mustang for the 2011 season. Hideo had a good tryout in the winter at WWCC and we are excited to have a young man with such sound fundamentals and work ethic on the team. Hideo has experience as a defender in high school and club but we think that he could also be used as an outside midfielder due to his high endurance and his speed. We welcome Hideo to the WWCC Mustang family and know he will have a great season for us.

The Deseret News released their All State lists for Boy's soccer in the state of Utah. We are so happy to have 3 of these outstanding players coming to WWCC in the fall. First, Logan Anderson of Copper Hills High was named 1st Team All State Defender in 5A. A recently added addition of Andrew Newbold was an honorable mention forward from Copper Hills High. Summer Update #1 - 2011

All Players need to have all paperwork and administrative items taken care off and handed in before the first practice. DO NOT DELAY ON THIS STUFF GET IT DONE NOW

1) If you have not done so please apply for admissions at the college asap. See www.wwcc.wy.edu/admissions/registra.htm this takes about 10 - 15 minutes.

2) If you have not done so please apply for housing on campus. See www.wwcc.wy.edu/housing/ and please inform them that you are a member of the men's soccer team there should be rooms reserved for you.

3) Send in your housing deposit of $150.00. The sooner this is done the better. They usually need it by August 1st. You can even send it in via the telephone at 307-382 - 1845.

4) Complete the FAFSA this is found at www.fafsa.ed.gov/ (this is for players receiving any financial aid and are US citizens) WWCC cannot award any federal money (scholarships - academic or athletic) until this is completed.

5) If you have not already done so sign and return 1 copy of your National Letter of Intent and your WWCC Letter of Intent. This is of course for those who are receiving a scholarship for soccer, all walk-ons need not worry about this step. If your NLI has not yet arrived it will arrive soon after you get all paperwork done. Some of you I still need some paperwork done like your eligibility affidavit before we can process it.

6) For those who have not yet got your National Letter of Intent you need to go to;

Also please realize that the men's soccer program expects you to have 15 credits that will help you on your way to graduate.

10) As of right now we are planning on having everyone move in on Saturday August 6^th with our first practice being the night of the 6^th. Things sometimes change due to the availability of dorms etc...

11) Please send your final official high school and any official college transcripts to WWCC as soon as they are available. This is very important; the transcripts need to be cleared for you to be eligible to play in the fall.

We will have a fitness test on the first day this fall and if you are not fit, it will show and it could effect your playing time. Summer Workouts to start on Monday June 6th

It is time for the incoming WWCC players to use the summer to get/keep their bodies in shape and to get better as a player and an athlete. Remember that when you do the workouts is not important. But weekly you should lift weights (the program is not important), run for distance, take shoots on goal, strengthen your core muscles, play soccer even if it is small sided games and run some sprints. From Brazil to WWCC

Luis Trevisan has signed a National Letter of Intent to play soccer for the WWCC Mustangs.
Luis is a big keeper and uses his size very well. Luis is an excellent shot blocker and has some outstanding hands. Luis is left footed and possesses some awesome footwork and kicking ability. He can punt the ball nearly three quarters of the pitch on a consistent basis. Luis will be the oldest player on the WWCC team next season and should use his maturity to help him be a leader on and off of the pitch. Luis is the first Brazilian that the WWCC Men's Soccer team has had in their history.

Orientation and Registration

All new incoming students to WWCC need to register for classes before they can play for the WWCC Mustangs. In order to register you need to go through orientation and registration. Here are the dates for those programs this summer.

You must sign up for this program. The sooner you can does this the better as some fill-up really quick. Recognition of UT players

As the spring season came to a close for high school sports, we want to extend some congratulations to the following players that will soon be joining the WWCC Mustangs from the state of UT. As of the time of this post the All-State Teams have not yet been released for Utah but we expect some of these same names to be recognized again.

Taylor Egbert of Bountiful High ended the season as the #7 scorer in the state of Utah with 18 goals, and the #2 scorer in 4A soccer. Taylor had the highest goals per game average in all of 4A with 1.06 goals per game average. Taylor lead his team to a Region crown and a birth in the Utah 4A quarterfinals in the state tournament. The BHS team had a +2.88 Goal Differential for the season, the second best in 4A.

Logan Anderson of Copper Hills High helped guide his team to a Region title and a place in the quarterfinals of the 5A Utah state tournament. Logan was crucial for a defense that average .5 goals allowed per match. CHHS was #1 in goal differential in all of 5A with a +2.56 difference.

Carson Broadhead and Yohan Yassin of Riverton High contributed to their team earning a place in the 5A Utah state soccer tournament, where they were also a quarter finalists. Riverton High on the season had a +.5 Goal differential and was ranked #11 in 5A for that category.

Strong Returning Class for WWCC for fall 2011

There are 7 returners or sophomores on the 2011 WWCC Mustang Men's Soccer
team. One of our largest returning classes ever. We are very excited to have
these players back with us and back to bring maturity, excitement and
enthusiasm for WWCC soccer.

First returner from the 2008 WWCC Mustang team is Erik Stembridge - Shown to the right with #24. Erik just finished serving a 2 year LDS mission to Brazil. Erik had a good freshman year including the game winning goal against LCCC in Cheyenne. Erik can play either wing, striker and even center mid. Erik will add skill and depth to the Mustangs.

Next is Devin King, also a returner from the 2008 Season. Devin is a true forward and started most of his matches his freshman year. Devin had 6 goals and 6 assists his freshman year, he was a 2nd Team All-Region IX forward as a freshman. Devin returned from a 2 year LDS mission to Argentina. He is a welcome addition to a WWCC team who does not return any of it's forwards from the 2010 season.

Cameron Lowry, also a return missionary from Argentina, rejoins the WWCC Mustangs. Cameron is a tall, solid and powerful defender. As a freshman he was voted as 1st Team All-Region IX in 2008. He was also the Newcomer of the Year in 2008 for Region IX. He played a sweeper his freshman year and may continue in the same position or even switch to a center back in a conventional 4 back or even in a 3 back. Cameron will help us no matter the formation or his position.

Nathaniel Sellis returns from the 2010 WWCC team. Nathaniel is a midfielder who has a presence on the ball and can play an attacking mid or even a defensive mid. Nathaniel has enough versatility to play as a wing or even a striker. Nathaniel has soccer smarts, meaning he knows what to do with the ball and where to position himself during matches. We are proud of what he accomplished his freshman year and cannot wait to see how good he gets during his sophomore campaign.

Angel Muniz returns to bring an offensive punch to the WWCC Mustang midfield. Angel really understood what it took to play at the NJCAA level by the end of his freshmen year. In our last 4 matches he earned man of the match twice. He scored 2 goals and notched 3 assists during his first year in Rock Springs. He was also voted by his teammates as the Most Improved Player for 2010. His 12 starts as a freshman in the midfield are very impressive. Angel is expected to start right where he left off in the 2010 fall season.

Spencer Mohlman from Bountiful UT will help solidify the WWCC defense as he returns for his sophomore year. Spencer played an outside fullback and a center back last season. Spencer has the skills, passing touch and speed to play an outside fullback but also has the size, strength and excellent positioning to play a center back. Spencer was a leader for his fellow freshmen in the off season both the fall and the spring. He has the most starts for a returning player off of the 2010 team with 15. We expect Spencer to be used on the back line as a center back, stopper or even an outside back. Spencer does also have the ability to play in the center of the pitch as a center midfield.

Mitch Christensen is another returning midfielders off of the WWCC 2010 squad. Mitch has had a few nagging and aching injuries throughout his freshman year that has slowed is growth a little bit. Mitch missed a few matches because of these injuries during the fall and most of the practices and scrimmages in the spring. Mitch understands the center midfield position so well. He understands his defensive responsibilities and plays a good attacking center mid also. Mitch is dedicated to stay healthy and leave WWCC soccer program with a solid sophomore year.

Updates on WY Players Recognition

Congratulations are in order for several soon to be WWCC Mustang men’s soccer players from the Cowboy state. Kortny Lancaster, Christian Mendoza and Taylor Chesnovar all helped lead the Rock Springs High School Tigers to the 4A WY State Soccer Cup. Incidentally, Christian Mendoza from RSHS was awarded 2^nd Team 4A West All Conference Midfielder and Taylor Chesnovar was awarded 1^st Team 4A West All Conference Defender and 1^st Team 4A All State Defender. Mitchell Cooper and Chad Englert from Lander Valley High School helped the Lander Tigers to a 1^st place spot in their 3A Southwest Conference and a 3^rd place finish at the 3A WY State Soccer Cup. Chad Englert was also selected as a 1^st Team 3A West All Conference Defender and a 1^st Team 3A All State Defender. This was the second year in a row for Chad to receive that honor. Cody Nice from Gillette WY and Campbell County High School received his second consecutive 1^st Team 4A East All Conference Defender award and his second consecutive 1^st Team 4A All State Defender. Congratulations to these WWCC Mustangs for their great senior seasons, their postseason awards and their graduation from high school.

Matt Robles Added to WWCC Staff

On Monday, Matt Robles was hired as the Assistant Head Coach for the Western Wyoming Men's Soccer team. This is Matt's second stint in the WWCC coaching staff. Matt was also an Assistant coach for the Mustangs in 2006. Matt Robles comes from Green River Wyoming and has a solid background and a lot of experience in the sport of soccer, including playing for the Green River Spurs and coaching youth soccer. Matt was an all-star defender with the Green River Wolves High School where he graduated in 2004. Matt started his collegiate career in Cheyenne WY with the LCCC Golden Eagles. Matt transferred to WWCC after his freshman year and played for the first team that Coach Atkinson coached at WWCC in the 2005 season. Matt played as a central midfielder during WWCC's state club championship team in 2005. Matt was then hired as the first ever assistant coach in WWCC soccer history. 2006 was Western Wyoming's first varsity year and Matt Robles helped the Mustangs establish as a premier NJCAA soccer program. After the 2006 season Matt and his family moved out of the region for pursuit of additional college and employment opportunities. Within the last year or so the Robles family moved back into the region.

Taylor Chesnovar a senior defender from Rock Springs WY has committed
to the men's soccer team for Western Wyoming Community College. Taylor is a talented defender who was a 3 year starter for the Rock Springs High School in Rock Springs WY. Taylor has played an outside fullback in a stopper sweeper combination, an outside back in a flat four and also a sweeper. As WWCC has many defenders on the roster for the 2011 season, Taylor possesses the foot and ball skills to perhaps transition to a midfielder or a wing. He is a smart player and uses his body and speed very well. Taylor was a captain on his high school team his senior year and helped the RSHS Tigers make it to the Wyoming State Soccer Cup 3 of his 4 years in high school. Welcome to Taylor, we know he will be a true asset to the WWCC soccer team for 2 years.

Efren Carrillo Perez joins WWCC

Efren Carrillo a striker is set to join the 2011 edition of WWCC Men's Mustang Soccer. Efren is a high energy, passionate player who is quick on the ball and makes smart decisions. Efren hails from West Wendover Nevada. Efren played his club ball at Tooele County United. All the leagues and teams he has been a part of, Efren has proved he is a consistent goal scorer. He has averaged over a goal per match in every tournament and league match he has been in. We look forward to having such a productive forward as part of the WWCC family. Sean Grube, who had been Assistant Head Coach at WWCC Men's Soccer Team for the past 3 seasons has decided to resign from his current position. Sean was an integral part of of WWCC growing as a program. Coach Grube's primary responsibilities were the defenders and the goalkeepers. In his 3 years WWCC had 3 goalkeepers that received All-Region Honors and the 2009 WWCC team had the lowest Goals Allowed Average in program history. Sean is currently the head coach at Rock Springs High School. We are sad to see Sean leave the program but also wish him luck with RSHS and know he will be around for help when needed with WWCC. The names for the new coaching staff will be released soon.

Mata added to the 2011 Mustangs

Stansbury High Soccer and the Tooele County United Club Soccer team are where Raul Mata honed his skills as a defender on the soccer pitch. Mr. Mata will now bring those talents to Rock Springs WY and help the Western Wyoming Community College Mustangs be the best that they can be. Raul will soon be graduating from AMES (Academy for Math, Engineering and Science). Raul is an outside defender who possesses good speed, quickness and soccer smarts. Raul has enough skills and physical ability that he may also be utilized in the midfield especially as a wing. We are excited to have Raul as a member of the WWCC team and know he is an outstanding young man and will also be an outstanding soccer player for us. Raul is shown in the blue kit to the left.

Spring Season a Success

On Saturday in Provo UT the WWCC men's socccer team concluded their spring soccer season with 3 short scrimmages. The men's soccer team practiced all spring looking forward to these scrimmages. The Mustangs had 3 different lineups in the 3 scrimmages and tried 4 different formations. We saw some Mustangs put on the red and black kit for the last time; Logan Bailey, Gilbert Gonzalez, Braxton Hamilton, Cody Rall and Taylor Whetman. The Mustangs saw players play for WWCC for the first time since 2008 as these players have returned from LDS missions; Ricardo Arreola, Devin King, Cameron Lowry and Erik Stembridge. We also had a new member of the WWCC soccer family make his debut for us; Luis Trevisan started 2 matches in goal for WWCC. Spencer Mohlman, Angel Muniz, Zach Plitt and Nathaniel Sellis finished off their freshman year with strong play in the spring.

The first scrimmage was between the Mustangs and the Rocky Mountain Rival Senior team. The Mustangs and the Rivals were tied at the half zero to zero. The first 50 seconds of the second half saw each team score a goal. The Mustangs scored off of the kick-off when Taylor Whetman booted the ball past the Rival goalkeeper from the half stripe. The Rivals were awarded a penalty kick seconds later and placed the ball past Luis Trevisan. Each team scored twice more in the half for a 3 to 3 tie. Goals for the Mustangs were by Taylor Whetman and Gilbert Gonzalez.

The second scrimmage pitted the Mustangs against the Empire FC team, formerly Rocky Mountain Rival Junior Team. The Mustangs played flat and did not look good at keeping possession in the first half. The formation used by the Mustangs was not the optimal formation against their opponent. Empire FC scored 3 goals in the first half and led 3 - 0. The second half saw the Mustangs change formation which seemed to help them keep position and energize the team. The rally was fun to watch but was not enough to have the Mustangs tie the match. WWCC was only able to score 2 goals and lost the second scrimmage 3 - 2. The goals in the second scrimmage were scored by Sellis and Erik Stembridge.

The final scrimmage was between the WWCC team and the Utah Valley University team out of Orem UT. This was a hard fought match with two teams a little tired and fatigued from their previous matches. The Wolverines scored first in the first half but the Mustangs answered back as Charley Lifferth touched in a long throw in by Cameron Lowry. The half time score was 1 - 1. The second half was when the Mustangs began to dominate the play but could not find the game winning goal. Gilbert Gonzalez, Zach Plitt and Nathaniel Sellis worked well as forwards in the second half to create opportunities. Neither team could find the net and the match ended in a 1 - 1 draw.

A First for WWCC

Western Wyoming Men's Soccer team has recently gotten a commitment from Steven Shelly. Steven will be the first resident of NV to play for the WWCC Mustangs. Steven is a dynamic player who plays as a forward and a attacking midfielder. Steven is from Elko Nevada and will be returning home from an LDS mission in Virginia. Steven set several records for scoring while at Elko High School. He also received multiple awards for his play in High School including Offensive MVP for his league. Kortny Lancaster from Rock Springs WY has committed to be a WWCC Mustang. Kortny is a defender. Kortny is a 2 year starter for the RSHS Tigers and a captain during his senior campaign. Kortny is a central defender that uses his body well and good positioning. He has a big leg and can place the ball very well from distance. Kortny scored 2 goals his junior year both from 40 + yards and both to help his team tie the match in the last minutes. He will bring some strength and stability to the back line this fall. Congratulations are in order for WWCC Freshman Defender Spencer Mohlman. Spencer and the rest of the Mustangs just finished up their 16 session weight training for the 2010 - 2011 school year. Spencer reached the milestone of the coventated Double Duece Club. You can reach this milestone by lifting 220,000 pounds of weights in 16 sessions, completing the 4 main lifts of Bench Press, Box Squats, Dead Lifts and Power Cleans. The players can also add two auxiliary lifts of their choice to help complete the feat. Spencer is just the 5th member of this club and only the second freshman to join. Mustangs defeat Cougars in Season Finale

In Rock Springs on Saturday the WWCC Mustangs wrapped up their 2010 season against their Region IX rivals the Western Nebraska Cougars. The Mustangs also saw 6 sophomores play their last official match as a member of the Western Wyoming team. The sophomores are; Taylor Whetman, Logan Bailey, Gilbert Gonzalez, Mika Goodman, Cody Rall and Braxton Hamilton. The Mustangs started the match very quickly with a goal in the second minute. Logan Bailey sent a great ball to Braxton Hamilton who lifted the ball past the WNCC keeper and gave the Mustangs an early lead. The goal was enough for the Mustangs to have the lead at the half with the score WWCC 1 - WNCC 0. The first half was some great soccer from Western with lots of accurate passing and possession.
The second half was a lot of the same with the Mustangs possessing the ball and attacking with a few Cougar counter attacks in between long times of possession. The game winning goal was scored in the 63rd minute when Miguel Maca slipped a pass to Mika Goodman who blasted the ball high and past the Cougar keeper. The Mustangs did not keep the 2 goal lead long as the Cougars scored 2 minutes later when their forward was able to dribble past a couple of WWCC defenders and score. The Mustangs played well for the remaining 25 minutes and kept the one goal advantage for their first region win of the season. The record for the Mustangs this season was 5 - 11 - 1, but if they were able to continue we feel we could of had a chance to win a region tournament match or two.

NIC wins in Rock Springs

On Friday in Rock Springs the North Idaho College Cardinals and the Western Mustangs played for the second time this season. The match was a good college soccer match-up as both teams played some good soccer from one end of the field to the other. Scoring chances were slim and the midfield action was quick with precise passing. The only score of the first half was a NIC goal in the 42nd minute when a ball was intercepted by a NIC player deep in the WWCC defensive half and was able to beat a couple of WWCC defenders and goalie for a goal. The score at the halftime was NIC 1 - WWCC 0.

The second half was very similar to the first half with some good soccer but few chances at either goal. The WWCC defense played very well, the midfield kept possession well and the offensive seemed to lack some creativity and the last ball or pass. The only goal in the second half was in the 69th minute off of a long cross from a NIC player that created a scrum in front of the net and a NIC player was able to hit the ball past Taylor Whetman. Mika Goodman and Miguel Maca both had some great opportunities for the Mustangs but were unable to find a score for WWCC. The final score was NIC 2 - WWCC 0.

Workhorse of the Match; Spencer Mohlman – Spencer played a great match as the center back our new 3 - 5 - 2 system and played it marvelously.

Schedule update

The University of Utah men's team informed the WWCC team the week of their match that they would not be able to attend their scheduled match on Saturday October 9th. The WWCC men's soccer team tried to get another team on short notice to come to Rock Springs to take the spot of the U of U team. No team was able to make the trip. Since the U of U team gave WWCC less than a week's notice and the reason of their cancellation was not an act of God, following NJCAA rules the match will be recorded as a forfeit win for WWCC over the U of U team. The next match for the WWCC team will be a home match versus the North Idaho College team on Friday October 15th, scheduled kick-off of 5pm.

Otero over Mustangs in a High Scoring Affair

On Friday in Rock Springs WY the Rattlers of Otero Junior College and Western Wyoming Mustangs continued their new Region IX rivalry. The weather was cold, wet and windy but that did not stop the match from heating up into a classic Region IX match for these two teams.

Otero got the board early with a nice throw in to a OJC forward who made a move and the WWCC defender slipped in trying to follow. The OJC player nicely placed the ball past Taylor Whetman the WWCC keeper in the 4^th minute. The teams were playing pretty good and even soccer when Otero scored their second goal of the half in the 30^th minute. Western was doing a good job of possessing the ball in the midfield but could not seem to get a lot of chances on the Rattler net as they only mustered 2 shots in the first half.

The Mustangs regrouped at the half and executed their game plan very well in the second half. However OJC was the first on the scoreboard in the second half when they scored in the 58^th minute to take a 3 – 0 lead. The Mustangs never said die and scored in the 60^th minute when Braxton Hamilton slipped a pass Miguel Maca who scored his team leading seventh goal of the season. However, the Rattlers were not shaken as they answered with another goal in the 61^st minute to extend their lead to 4 – 1 with less than thirty minutes to play. The Mustangs dug deep down inside and found a way to get back in the match. In the 71^st minute Gilbert Gonzalez scored off of an Angel Muniz assist to cut the lead to 2. A penalty kick was convert for the Mustangs in the 83^rd minute when a Braxton Hamilton was fouled during a corner kick and Angel Muniz kicked a great penalty kick past the Rattler keeper. With just 7 minutes to play the score was OJC 4 – WWCC 3. Two minutes later the speed of the Rattler forwards found space again behind the Mustang defense and netted their 5^th goal of the match. Not to ever think they were out of the match WWCC score one more goal in the 90^th minute. The goal was from Jorge Chacon and assisted by Angel Muniz. There was not enough time left in the match for another WWCC chance on goal, but WWCC can hold their heads high playing so well against the Region IX leaders. The loss does mean that the WWCC mens team will finish 5th in the Region and also signifies that they will not participate in the 2010 Region IX tournament as only the top 4 Region finishers will attend the tournament.

Rivals get Revenge on Western

On Tuesday in Spanish Fork UT the Mustangs played against college development program Rocky Mountain Rivals. The match was played at the American Leadership Academy field. The Mustangs had to adapt to a change of venue and change of time of the match all within 24 hours of the actual match. A small team of Mustangs was hoping to be up to the task.

The match did not turn in favor of the Mustangs and they conceded two goals in a 3-minute span in the first half, in the 32^nd and 35^th minute. The first goal coming from a long, low driven shot and the second goal coming off of a corner kick. Todd West was the starting keeper for the Mustangs and played the entire 90 minutes. The Rivals took a 2 – 0 lead into the half.

The Mustangs felt confident after the halftime break that they could get back into the match. However a second yellow card on Spencer Mohlman in the beginning of the second half left the Mustangs a man down for nearly the last 40 minutes of the match. The Mustangs battled bravely but could not connect offensively and were playing with a man down. The Rivals iced the match when they scored in the 75^th minute off of a through ball. The man disadvantage did hamper any Mustang comeback, as they were only able to take 2 shots in the second half of the match.

Cougars Best the Mustangs

On Saturday in Scottsbluff NE the Western Wyoming Mustangs played against the Cougars of Western Nebraska. The Mustangs were hoping for a win to try to get themselves into the 4^th place spot in the Region. In a fairly even match the WNCC Cougars took the wind in the first half and started in the attack. The Mustangs rebounded well and possessed the ball very well in the first half with 1 and 2 touch passing. However the Mustangs did not gain a lot of quality looks in the first half. The Cougars had a few chances in the first half and scored the lone goal of the first 45 in the thirtieth minute off of a rebound previously saved by WWCC keeper Taylor Whetman. The halftime score was WNCC 1 – WWCC 0.

The second half saw the Mustangs take some more chances offensively and get a couple of great chances in front of the Cougar net by Charley Lifferth, Miguel Maca and Angel Muniz. Sadly for the Mustangs 2 penalty kicks were called on them in the 60^th and 63^rd minute and the Cougars were able to score on both attempts and took a commanding lead of 3 – 0 with less than a half hour left of the match. WWCC changed formations to try to get more bodies into the offensive third of the field but could not score and the match ended 3 – 0 in favor of WWCC.
