First Spring Scrimmages in the Book

On Saturday the 14th of April the WWCC Spring team headed down to Utah and played two spring scrimmages. The first scrimmage was against the Weber State University Club team. WSU Wildcats won the NIRSA National Championship for Club teams last fall. Scoring was quick and often for both teams. Devin King scored a great left footed goal for the Mustangs to start off the scoring, Taylor Egbert had the assist. Erik Stembridge playing his first match as a keeper did well and made some great saves for the Mustangs. WSU scored next to tie the match at 1 goal a piece. Andrew Newbold was able to pressure the Wildcat keeper and scored when he put his body in harms way. The ball kicked by WSU's keeper was blocked by Newbold and scored. The Mustangs had a 2 - 1 lead at the halftime.
The second half was again a success for both squad's offense. Western added two more goals with Steven Shelley and Andrew Newbold both scoring. Both WWCC goals were assisted by Taylor Egbert with an additional assist going to Ashenafi Ngari. Weber State was able to get past the WWCC defense 3 times. The final score at the end of 90 minutes was Weber State 4 - Western Wyoming 4. This rivalry will continue as both squads are planning on a home and home series in the fall 2012 season. The Mustang Men of the Match were; Erik Stembridge and Andrew Newbold.
Later on in the afternoon the WWCC Mustangs had their second scrimmage of the day against Utah FC in Provo. The first half saw two teams feel each other out, with many shots and opportunities from both squads. Utah FC and WWCC were tied 0 - 0 at the end of the 1st half. The home team Utah FC made some adjustments and added 3 quick goals of the WWCC team in the first 6 minutes of the second half. WWCC did not quit and played well and hard even though they were tired. Steven Shelley drew a penalty kick and converted the penalty kick in the last minute of the match. The score for the 2nd scrimmage of spring 2012 was Utah FC 3 - WWCC 1. The Mustang Men of the Match were; Steven Shelley and Mitch Cooper.
