On Thursday in Alamosa CO, after a 14 hour bus trip the Mustangs of Western Wyoming squared off against NCAA Division II Adams State College Grizzlies in a scrimmage. Adams State is in their first year of varsity soccer and they picked up two former Mustangs on scholarship for their inaugural season: Nic Gonzalez and Chase Talbot.
In the scrimmage the Mustangs started very well and scored the first two goals of the scrimmage in the 7th and 15th minute. Kyle Seljaas scored the first goal unassisted to give WWCC and early lead. Joe Lake doubled the lead when he scored on a beautiful right footed shot in the 15th minute assisted by Omar Jaimes. ASC was able to get on the scoreboard when they scored in the 21st minute but WWCC took a 2 to 1 lead into the halftime break.
They second half was very physical and a good introduction for many to the physical demands of men's college soccer. Western was able to draw a Penalty Kick with about 15 minutes in the scrimmage but the ASC keeper made a wonderful save. The tables were turned when ASC was awarded a penalty in the 79th minute. The Grizzlies were just able to beat the WWCC keeper to tie the scrimmage. The final 11 minutes were fast and furious and saw both teams with some good opportunities to score. In the 87th minute Chris Byers scored for WWCC, to give them the game winning goal at 3 to 2. The assist on the late goal was from Phil Angerhofer. This was a great test for the Mustangs and it is wonderful to pick up a scrimmage win against a 4 year varsity school.
Up Next for the Mustangs: Scrimmage #3 - Saturday 8/22 - versus Rocky Mountain Rival at 11:00am at Crossroads Park (Directions are a link on the right)
Workhorse of the Match: Joe Lake 1 goal (awesome shot that changed momentum in the match)
