Late Goal Lifts LCCC over WWCC

On Wednesday in Rock Springs rivals Laramie County CC and Western Wyoming CC played a classic Region IX match. The weather was not very helpful to the ebb and flow of the match with temperatures in the low 40s and 20 - 30 mph winds blowing across the field. The Mustangs were determined to not let the Golden Eagles come out strong and get an early goal. Western was able to to play with and even dictate a few things against LCCC. The first half was so evenly played that both teams went into halftime tied at zero.

The second half saw the Mustangs come out and play an excellent first 5 - 10 minutes and string some passes together and get a few looks at the LCCC goal. The best chance for the Mustangs might have been in the second half when a ball was cleared by the LCCC defense and hung in the air just outside the 18 yard box. WWCC forward Joe Lake volleyed the shot with his right foot and just narrowly missed scoring the shot. With time winding down the Golden Eagles had a free kick on their attacking half that took a LCCC friendly bounce to the feet of one of their players who placed it past the WWCC keeper, Taylor Whetman. The lone goal of the match was scored in the 88th minute. The Mustangs earnestly tried to get the ball forward for an equalizing goal but it was too late for any sustained attack and the final score was LCCC 1 - WWCC 0. This dropped the Western Wyoming Mustang's record back down to .500 with 5 wins, 5 losses and 2 ties. Also this Region IX loss means the Mustangs will play against the Cougars of Western Nebraska in the Region IX semi-finals for a chance to re-match LCCC in the Region IX finals.
