NIC Cardinals Beat WWCC in Season Opener

On Saturday in Coeur d'Alene, ID the WWCC Mustangs faced off against the North Idaho Cardinals. This was the third time in WWCC history that the Mustangs played a match in North Idaho during the opening weekend of the season. The Mustangs started the match slowly and were lucky to not get scored on twice in the first minute of play. In the 8th minute of the match NIC found the net first off of a kick from about 25 yards out that found the upper 90 and beat keeper Taylor Whetman. Close calls on goals by Edwin Sanchez and Braxton Hamilton almost tied up the match but missed by inches. In the 26th minute NIC scored their second goal of the half, off of a header kicked in from a corner kick. The NIC Cardinals kept the lead at 2 - 0 into the half time break. WWCC played a good first half and looked better in many different aspects of their game.
The Mustangs regrouped at half time and played another pretty good half of soccer. In the 60th minute of the match the Mustangs got within one goal when Miguel Maca took a shot that was blocked by the NIC keeper and Edwin Sanchez was their to put it away. Again WWCC was close to scoring another goal when Edwin Sanchez had a defender slide tackle the ball away on the goal line. NIC took control of the match for good in the 75th minute when they scored on a 30 yard volley that took a lot of the wind out of the WWCC Mustangs. NIC added another goal in the 80th minute to insure their victory. The final score was NIC 4 - WWCC 1. This was the first time that WWCC had scored in Coeur d'Alene, ID in their history and the closest match against NIC at their home field.
