Mustangs Struggle to Find the Net But Get the W

On Friday the WWCC Mustangs met their soon to be Region IX Rivals the Lamar Community College Running Lopes in a match in Goodland Kansas.  Lamar is currently a club team but will be joining the Region IX soccer realm next season as a varsity program.  This is the first meeting between the Mustangs and the Running Lopes on the soccer pitch.  The match was statistically and possession wise in the favor of the Mustangs but WWCC struggled to make their chances amount to goals.  The first half the Mustangs had 18 shots but were only able to score 1 goal as Bernie Manuel kicked in a goal after the keeper let it slip through his hands.  The assist will be credited to Taylor Egbert after he sent in the free kick that the keeper mishandled.  The lone WWCC goal was in the 27th minute, it was Manuel's first career college goal.  The score at the half was Mustangs 1 and Running Lopes 0.
In the second half the Mustangs continued to barrage the Lamar CC goal but had very few chances cross the goal line.  The Mustangs managed two goals, the first of the second half was in the 72nd minute when Richard Harris smartly replayed a free kick ball quickly and sent a through ball to Jarom Stuart who calmly beat the Lamar CC keeper to the bottom right corner.  This was Stuart's first goal of the 2012 season.  The final tally for WWCC came in the 82nd minute when Jarom Stuart had collected the ball on the end line and sent back a pass for a teammate that was redirected by a LCC players into his own net,  This third goal is considered an own goal since the defensive player's touch redirected it into and towards the goal.  The final score for the match, the first ever match for WWCC in Kansas, was 3 - 0.

Match Facts; Shots – WWCC 39, LCC 2; Assists – WWCC 2, LCC 0; Saves – WWCC 1, LCC 11; Free Kicks – WWCC 4, LCC 5; Corner Kicks – WWCC 19, LCC 1; Cards – WWCC 0, LCC 0

Mustang Man of the Match – Jarom Stuart - Jarom got his first goal of 2012 and showed the same type of form that got him voted as the WWCC Offensive MVP of 2011.

Slow Start Sinks Mustang's Chances

On Saturday at Rock Springs Junior High the WWCC Mustangs squared off against the Wildcats of Weber State University.  This was a very well played college soccer match between two good teams.  The Mustangs were off to a 1 - 0 start along with Weber State.  Both teams defeated North Idaho earlier in the weekend.  WWCC is a full varsity NJCAA soccer team and Weber State is a reigning National College Club Champions.  The lone goal of the match was in the 4th minute when a Weber State player hit a hard curving and dipping shot past Mitch Jensen, the WWCC keeper.  The Mustangs did start out slow and allowed too much space for this player to get his shot off.  The Mustangs controlled very little of the first half and were caught often chasing the ball and not generating many true scoring opportunities.  The halftime score was 1 - 0.
WWCC made some great adjustments at half and came out in the last 45 minutes pressing the play more with more opportunities and chances from the Mustangs.  Shots in the second half were from Richie Harris, Taylor Egbert, Greg Howard and Nate Pierce.  The Weber State goalie made some nice saves on some of the Mustang shots and the other were just wide of the mark.  WWCC found more of the ball in the second half and more than doubled their possession and their shots.  However no goals were scored from either team in the final forty five minutes and the end of the match the score was 1 - 0 in favor of the Wildcats.  The loss puts WWCC at 1 win and 1 lose for the 2012 season after their first weekend of play.

Match Facts; Shots – WWCC 10, WSU 13; Assists – WWCC 0, WSU 1; Saves – WWCC 4, WSU 4; Free Kicks – WWCC 17, WSU 12; Corner Kicks – WWCC 4, WSU 4; Cards – WWCC 1, WSU 2

Mustang Man of the Match – Adrian Sanchez - Adrian is the anchor to our back line and had another great match for the Mustangs playing all 90 minutes.

Mustangs Off to a Winning Start

On Thursday the 2012 season started for the WWCC Mustangs as they squared off against an old rival the North Idaho Cardinals.  The match was played at Rock Springs Junior High Turf Field.  This was the first time the Mustangs had played at RSJH.  WWCC did not take long to get the first official goal of the season when Richard Harris slotted a ball past the NIC keeper in the 9th minute, goal assisted by Taylor Egbert.  The rest of the 1st half saw the Cardinals keeping the majority of the possession but unable to penetrate the Mustang defense with WWCC being efficient in counter attacking and getting genuine scoring chances on the NIC keeper.  WWCC's forwards Jarom Stuart and Greg Howard both had good chances on the goal including a header from Stuart that hit the post.  The halftime score was 1 - 0 in favor of the home standing Mustangs.

The second half saw the Mustangs improve on possessing the ball and still be able to move forward towards the Cardinal goal.  The 60th minute Taylor Egbert doubled the Mustang lead when he slide past several NIC defenders and hit a left footed shot that hit the back of the net.  The third goal of the match for the Mustangs was a thing of beauty that saw a lot of Mustangs contribute to a string of passes that moved past and through the NIC defense.  The play ended when Richard Harris passed the ball to Greg Howard low and on the floor square in front of the goal.  Howard finished his opportunity in the 73rd minute of play.  Richard Harris finished off the scoring in the 81st minute when the ball was stolen from the NIC defense by Taylor Egbert and passed to Harris, who attacked the right side of the goal and achieved his brace (2 goals in a match).  The final score of the match stood at WWCC 4 - NIC 0. Mitch Jensen was the keeper for the entire 90 minutes of play and earned his 1st shutout in a Mustang jersey.  This was the Mustangs largest margin of victory over NIC in their 7 year rivalry.  This moves the WWCC overall record to the season to 1 - 0 - 0.

Match Facts; Shots – WWCC 17, NIC 21; Assists – WWCC 3, NIC 0; Saves – WWCC 11, NIC 2; Free Kicks – WWCC 6, NIC 4; Corner Kicks – WWCC 3, NIC 5; Cards – WWCC 0, NIC 0

Mustang Man of the Match – Richard Harris - Richard had 2 goals and 1 assist in the match along with playing very well for the Red and Black.

Final Scrimmage for WWCC in Dixie

On Monday in St. George Utah the WWCC Mustangs took on the NCAA Division II Dixie State College of Utah Red Storm.  This is the third year in a row that the two teams have squared off against each other in a scrimmage.  As expected the DSC team was a little faster and controlled much of the matches possession.  WWCC was not able to mount much offense in the first half and basically just survived the first 45 minutes playing a lot of defense.  One awesome moment for the Mustangs was when Mitch Jensen goal keeper saved a penalty kick against the Red Storm in the 21st minute to keep the first half shutout.  The score at the half was 0 - 0.

The Red Storm was able to find a few holes around the WWCC defense in the second half which included the scrimmages only 2 goals.  Dixie scored in the 63rd and in the 75th minute.  Both goals came after the Red Storm had taken the ball out to the left side of the WWCC defense and passed it back inside.  All Mustangs on the trip found some playing time in the last scrimmage as starting lineups and subbing rotations are becoming set and formed for this years squad.  The Mustangs had three good chances to score when Jarom Stuart had 2 shots and Bernard Manuel had a header that was saved by the Red Storm keeper.  The final score after 90 minutes was Dixie State 2 and WWCC 0.  This was the last scrimmage for the Mustangs as the regular season will begin on Thursday August 23rd.

Match Facts; Shots – WWCC 4, DSC 23; Assists – WWCC 0, DSC 1; Saves – WWCC 9, DSC 2; Free Kicks – WWCC 9, DSC 17; Corner Kicks – WWCC 1, DSC9; Cards – WWCC 0, DSC 2

Mustang Man of the Match – Mitch Jensen.  Mitch not only saved a penalty kick in the first half but several other great saves and 60 minutes of scoreless soccer.

Mustangs Go Down South For 3rd Scrimmage

The WWCC Mustangs will head to St. George Utah for their third and final scrimmage of the 2012 season.  The Mustangs will take on the Dixie State Red Storm on Monday August 20th at 7:00pm.  The match will be played at Hansen Stadium on the Dixie State College.

Scrimmage #2 a Good Test for WWCC

The 2012 Mustangs traveled to Salt Lake City on Saturday to play against the Westminster JV squad for their second scrimmage of the season.  The sweltering heat did not stop the Mustangs from playing their short passing possession style.  The scoring started in the first half when the Mustangs converted off of a Greg Howard finish to take a 1 – 0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the match.  The Mustangs kept the majority of the possession in the first half and saw several more good chances on the Gryffin’s net but were unable to score but the Mustangs were also able to keep the Westminster JV off of the scoreboard in the first 45 minutes.  The half time score was 1 to 0 in favor of the road WWCC Mustangs.
The NAIA Westminster Gryffins adjusted at the half and played a lot better as the match progressed.  Westminster evened the score when the ball was initially saved by WWCC Mustang goalie Taylor West but squirted out and Westminster was able to bury their chance.  Within the first 10 minutes of the second half the score was tied at 1 goal apiece.  Taylor Egbert helped WWCC to break the tie when he hit a rocket of a shot at the top of the 18-yard box into the top right corner of the goal past the stunned Westminster keeper.  The WWCC lead of 2 to 1 did not last long as Westminster tied the match with around 20 minutes left when off of a corner kick they headed the ball past Taylor West and the WWCC Mustang defense.  The scrimmage deciding play happened in the 80th minute when Bernie Manuel slotted a pass through the Westminster defense that found a sprinting Steven Shelley who collected the ball and chipped it over the charging Westminster keeper.  WWCC was able to play solid defense, keep possession of the ball and kill the final ten minutes to get a well-deserved scrimmage win against a quality Westminster JV opponent with the score 3 to 2.  We added our 23rd WWCC Mustang to see action of the season when Jarom Stuart was able to play today.

Match Facts; Shots – WWCC 12, Westm 11; Assists – WWCC 2, Westm 1; Saves – WWCC 6, Westm 4; Free Kicks – WWCC 5, Westm 5; Corner Kicks – WWCC 3, Westm 5; Cards – WWCC 0, Westm 0

2012 Scrimmage Season Underway

On Saturday the 2012 version of the WWCC Mustangs started their scrimmage season by traveling to Sandy Utah to face off against the LDS Business College Lions.  This was the first such meeting between the two schools.  On a very warm and muggy morning the Mustangs started the scoring in the scrimmage when in the 8th minute Taylor Egbert kicked a ball past the LDSBC keeper.  The score stayed the same at 1- 0 until the LDSBC caught the WWCC defense in transition and got a 1 on 1 opportunity with the WWCC keeper Mitch Jensen in the 35th minute and LDSBC got their only goal of the match.  WWCC stormed back as Greg Howard scored his first goal as a Mustang in the 40th minute with an assist by Ashenafi Negeri.  The scored was 2 to 1 in favor of the Mustangs at the half time break.
The Mustangs seemed to own the second half as Steven Shelley scored his first goal of his sophomore campaign in the 51st minute off of a Logan Anderson assist.  Ashenafi Negeri added the 4th Mustang goal int he 57th minute when he put home a rebound from a Taylor Egbert shot that hit off of the post.  Taylor Egbert finished the scoring in the 83rd minute when he collected a nice through ball from Steven Shelley and scored his second goal of the match.  14 new Mustangs got their first action in the Red, Black and White including; Mitch Jensen, Taylor West, DJ Searcy, Tyler Wilkinson, Bernie Manuel, Richard Harris, Greg Howard, Jared Jess, Nathan Cutler, Ashenafi Negeri, Adrian Sanchez, Jose Rangel, Nathan Pierce and Derek Smith.  8 Sophomores continued their playing career are; Christian Mendoza, Mitch Cooper, Taylor Egbert, Cody Nice, Logan Anderson, Steven Shelley, Taylor Chesnovar and Brandon Bushman.
