Sophomore Send-Off a Success

On Saturday in Rock Springs the Plainsmen of Northeastern Junior College traveled up to Rock Springs to play a Region IX match against the Mustangs of Western Wyoming.  The Plainsmen were first to get on the board when an errant back pass from the Mustangs beat the WWCC keeper and found the back of the net for an own goal and a NJC lead in the first half of 1 - 0.  The Mustangs battled back into the wind and scored 2 goals before half.  They goals came from when Logan Anderson sent a nice diagonal ball back across the goal and DJ Searcy re-directed it into the net.  The other goal in the first half came after a free kick drawn and taken by Richard Harris.  The ball bounced out of the penalty box and Jared Jess struck the ball well and it found the bottom corner.  The Mustangs took a 2 - 1 lead in the halftime break.
The second half started with the Mustangs keeping much of the possession and the Plainsmen bunkering in and playing defense.  The Mustangs struggled for much of the half to get off quality chances in the last 45 minutes.  However the break came from a nice pass from Steven Shelley that Greg Howard was just able to touch and get past the NJC keeper.  At this point of the second half the flood gates opened for the WWCC team as they got four more goals before the end of regulation.  The last four goals were by; Richard Harris, Jarom Stuart, Steven Shelley and Brandon Bushman.  The assists on these goals were by; Jarom Stuart (twice) and Taylor Egbert.  The final score was WWCC 7 - NJC 1.  This was the final regular season match for WWCC and brings their overall record to 10 - 8 - 1 and 5 - 6 - 1 in Region IX play.  The Mustangs finished 4th in the Region for the second straight year and will host a Region IX tournament play on Tuesday as Trinidad State Junior College will visit.
