On Saturday in Provo the 2013 spring season ended for the Western Wyoming Community College Mustangs. The Mustangs played two scrimmage matches on the day, the first against a men's club in Provo - Utah FC and the second against the United Soccer League team - BYU.
The first scrimmage saw several of the reserve players starting and getting a lot of playing time as the team prepared for 2 tough matches on the day. The first few minutes were dominated by the WWCC Mustangs but quickly swung in the Utah FC direction. The first 2 goals were scored by Utah FC within the first 20-25 minutes of the first half. The Mustangs rallied and tied the score before half when the Mustangs got goals by Ashenafi Negeri and Taylor Egbert. The half time score was 2 - 2. The second half started with the Mustangs dominating play and taking a 2 goal lead at 4 - 2 with goals from Richard Harris and Bernard Manuel. A red card changed the scrimmage as WWCC was forced to play a man down for the last 20 minutes of the match. The Mustangs tried their best to withhold the Utah FC offense but yielded two goals in the last 14 minutes of play. The scrimmage ended after 90 minutes with a 4 - 4 draw.
The second scrimmage was a match against the BYU team a USL semi-pro team. The match was played at Haws Practice Field on the BYU campus. The Mustangs were so much more effective this spring season against BYU than last year. The Cougars scored 2 goals in each half. The Mustangs had 2 great opportunities each half. In the first half Ashenafi Negeri just missed with a shot and Richard Harris was stopped by the BYU keeper. The second half chances for WWCC were once again Richard Harris after his shot got past the keeper was cleared off the goal line by a Cougar defender. The other second half chance was from Nathan Cutler whose left footed shot just missed the right post and the side netting. Taylor West played all 90 minutes in the net and played very well. The overall score was BYU 4 - WWCC 0. The Mustangs would have liked to finish one of their opportunities but were pleased with their play against a great opponent and hope to continue to show improvement and heart. The scrimmage concluded the 2013 spring season and practice.
Up Next for the Mustangs - summer conditioning and getting ready for August and the start of the fall 2013 training camp.
