After coming off of a Region IX road trip weekend the Mustangs traveled to Green River WY for a home match versus Salt Lake Community College on Tuesday.
Western did not show well in the scrimmage against SLCC in Salt Lake in early August. SLCC has some very skillful players and try to dominate possession. The first half had SLCC with a lot of possession but due to Kyle Mivhsek, WWCC keeper and the Western defense the score at half time was tied 0 to 0.
In the second half Western continued to play great defense but found their attack on counters to an ever desperate SLCC Bruin team. The break through came in the 76th minute on a counter attack. Western was fouled. In one of the most heads up plays by a WWCC player in many years Ty Nielsen took the free kick quickly before the SLCC defense and keepere were set up, lofting the ball into an empty net. Frustration and desperation by SLCC after the WWCC goal helped the Mustangs found another opportunity in the 79th minute when Briston Lowell scored off of a Carlos Gonzalez assist. For the final 10 plus minutes Western just had to keep the Bruins away from the goal to maintain the lead and the shutout victory. Western won the match 2 to 0. The win improves the overall record to 3 - 1 - 1.
Mustang Man of the Match: Kyle Mivshek - Kyle had 11 saves in the match along with the shutout.
