The Mustangs played against their second oldest rival on Friday in Scottsbluff NE, the Western Nebraska CC Cougars.
The Cougars did a good job of controlling most of the play in the first half and snuck in a late 1st half goal against the Mustangs in the 42nd minute to go into the halftime break with a 1 to 0 lead.
In the second 45 minute half the Cougars continued their strong play and added to their lead in the match in the 64th minute. Again the Mustangs found themselves in a familiar situation, down by multiple goals in the second half. Once again the Mustangs were able to change tactics and apple pressure to create offense and get back into the match. The first WWCC goal came from Tanner Trumble in the 75th minute. The score started from a Ty Nielsen free kick which hit the WNCC wall, Grayson Barnes was able to pass to Tanner Trumble who kicked a slow rolling ball past the WNCC keeper. Eleven minutes later in the 86th minute Briston Lowell tied the match with his goal off of a Grayson Barnes assist. The score was tied 2 to 2 at the end of 90 minutes.
The Mustangs and Cougars played two 10 minute overtime periods, the first period was dominated by the Mustangs but the second period was controlled by the Cougars. Neither team was able to score and the final score was a 2 to 2 draw. The tie makes the WWCC record 8 - 7 - 2 on the 2016 season. The Region IX North record for the Mustangs is 5 - 1 - 1, the tie guarantees a second place Region IX North finish for the Mustangs and a home playoff match in the quarterfinals.
Mustang Man of the Match: Tanner Trumble for the first goal in the comeback and never giving up on the team regardless of the situation.
