In Rock Springs on Saturday the Western Wyoming Mustangs played their first official game against the Rocky Mountain Rivals. The Rivals are a college development program club team based out of Provo UT. The Mustangs were first to get on the scoreboard with a well placed thirty yard goal from Omar Jaimes, assisted by Chris Byers. But then a lack of intensity saw the Rivals score three unanswered goals. So at the half the Mustangs saw themselves down three to one. The Mustangs were able to close the gap quickly in the second half with an early goal by Allen Deru. The momentum saw the Mustangs score again, also a goal from Allen Deru, assisted by Devin King, to tie the score. The last ten minutes of regulation were fast and furios, they saw the Rivals take the lead off of a corner kick at 4 to 3. With under a minute left to go in the game Chase Talbot was able to feed the ball to Omar Jaimes who buried it for the tying score in regulation. In NJCAA soccer , two (2) ten minute overtime periods are played with sudden victory. So the Rivals and Mustangs played overtime. In the first overtime period the Rivals weaved through the WWCC defense and found a shot that beat goal keeper Tyson Day, the goal ended the game and gave the Rivals a 5 to 4 overtime win over the Mustangs. Several players were able to get their first taste of college soccer including goalkeeper Tyson Day, defender Jeff Jewell and mid/defender Chris Byers.
