Mustangs Beat the Griffins

On Saturday at the Westminster College campus the Western Wyoming Mustangs had their 2nd scrimmage of the season. They squared off against the Westminster Griffin Reserve team. Coming off of their first scrimmage the day before in St. George the Mustangs were anxious to continue their improvements. The following Mustangs got their first starts of their careers; Todd West and Nathaniel Sellis. The following sophomores got their first starts of the season; Mika Goodman and Braxton Hamilton.
These two teams match up very well against each other as the last 4 times they had played were1 goal matches and 2 of those 4 matches went into overtime.
The action was fast from the start and saw the Mustangs take an early lead as Miguel Maca scored his first goal as a WWCC Mustang in the 15th minute of play. Thirteen minutes later the Griffins answered back as they were able to put the ball past Todd West and even the score at 1 a piece. The Mustangs gained back control of the possession and added their second goal of the half in the 42nd minute. The goal was scored by Edwin Sanchez (his first as a Mustang) after a great cross by Charley Lifferth. The score stayed 2 - 1 at the halftime break.
In the second half the Mustangs started really quickly with 2 goals in the first 6 minutes of the half. The 3rd goal of the match for the Mustangs was from Jorge Chacon off of a Mika Goodman free kick this goal was in the 48th minute. Three minutes later the Mustangs scored their fourth and final goal of the match, the goal was from Miguel Maca assisted by Edwin Sanchez. The Mustangs were able keep possession and limit Westminster's chances the rest of the second half. However the Griffins were able to sneak a shot into the upper corner against Taylor Whetman in the 78th minute. The final score of the match was 4 - 2 in favor of the Mustangs. This was the most that WWCC has ever scored against Westminster and our biggest victory (goal differential) against the Griffins.

Game Stats - Shots; WWCC 12, WC 8 - Assists; WWCC 3, WC 1 - Cards; WWCC 2, WC 0 - Free Kicks; WWCC 5, WC 7 - Keeper Saves; WWCC 6, WC 6 - Corner Kicks; WWCC 2, WC 6

Workhorse of the Match - Miguel Maca for scoring 2 goals in the match and finding and creating more chances at the net.
