After a long week of travel for the Mustangs, a trip to Salt Lake City UT, a trip to St George UT and a trip to Bismarck ND the 2013 season was kicked off in Bismarck North Dakota against the Bismarck State College Mystics. This was the Mustangs first trip to North Dakota and the first time that they squared off against Bismarck State.
The goal scoring started quickly with a Mustang goal in the 6th minute when defender Chandler Young found a nice through ball to Bernard Manuel who calmly chipped the ball over the on coming keeper for an early 1-0 Mustang lead. Bernard was not done scoring in the first half as he notched his second goal in the 18th minute off of a nice run and pass from Rico Mendez. The Mustangs were able to maintain their lead at the end of the first 45 minutes and led 2 - 0 at the half time break.
The teams regrouped and started the second half, it took the Mustangs a few minutes to get back the possession of the ball but when they did they scored in the 54th minute. This goal was scored by Rico Mendez who received a ball from Bernard Manuel, Rico easily placed it into the bottom left corner from about 20 yards out. The 4th Mustang goal was the 3rd goal of the match for Bernard Manuel, Rico Mendez set up Bernard again in the 56th minute. Raul Cavazos sent a nicely driven square ball into the box in the 72nd minute that Rico Mendez scored on for the Mustang's 5th goal. The final goal of the match and the Mustang's sixth goal came from Raul Cavazos who chipped a bouncing ball over the keeper from a Vitor Nazareth assist in the 78th minute. Keepers Taylor West, Taylor Bell and the rest of the Mustang defense shared the honors of the first shutout of the season in the first match.
