Second Scrimmage Date a Good Day for Mustangs

On a rainy Saturday the Mustangs headed south to Salt Lake City Utah for a pair of spring scrimmages.  The original plan was for the Mustangs to travel to Pocatello ID but Idaho State was not available to host the Western team as planned, so with less than a week matches were planned between Western Wyoming, Joga FC and the University of Utah.
In the first scrimmage Western Wyoming played against Joga FC.  Joga FC was a mix of Premier Men's club members and D1 men's club talent.  The play was dominated by the Mustangs throughout most of the match but the scoreboard did not reflect the domination by WWCC until the second half.  Half time score was 1 - 1 with Western scoring first - a goal by Phil Angerhofer, assisted by Brock Mosier and Joga FC quickly scoring afterwards.
Winning the possession paid off huge dividends in the second half as the Mustangs score 5 goals while only allowing 1.  The Western goals were scored by; Devian Kurete assist by Piero Levano, Chris Elizondo unassisted, Eric Walker assist by Steven Shelley, Vitor Nazareth assist by Steven Shelley, Adrian Montaño assist by Rico Mendez and Rico Mendez assist by Brock Mosier.  The final score was 7 - 2 in favor of the Mustangs.  Kyle Mivshek got the win in keeper with a 90 minute performance.
In the second match of the day, the Mustangs traveled up the hill to the U of U campus to face the University of Utah men's soccer club team.  In a very competitive and friendly match the Utes opened the scoring with a header off of a free kick about half way though the first half.  That was the only scoring in the first 45 minutes but the Mustangs were close to scoring many times including a kick from Devian Kurete that if not deflected by a Utah defender would have equalized the score.  In the second half the battle was again fierce and the play of a high quality.  Most of the chances were by the Mustangs in the second half, including a header that missed by Colton Cottrell.  The Mustangs tied the match with about 5 minutes to go.  Brock Mosier was fouled in the penalty area and Adrian Sanchez converted on the penalty kick.  Just when the match seemed to be heading to a tie the ref blew the whistle on the Mustangs after what looked like a clean block of the ball from WWCC keeper Eric Walker.  The Utes scored the 12 yard kick and took the lead with just seconds on the clock.  The final score was 2 - 1 in favor of the home Utah Utes.  The following players wore the Red Mustang uniforms for the last time in their career; Zach Plitt, Adrian Sanchez, Vitor Nazareth, Kyle Seljaas, Tyler Trumble, Adrian Montaño, Steven Shelley and Phil Angerhofer.  The spring 2014 season was a success in the eyes of the Mustangs as we improved as a unit and showed it by playing good soccer all spring long.
