Western Opens Up 2017 Season with a Victory

On the first official day of the 2017 season the Mustang faced the USU-Eastern Eagles in Price UT.

As most of the matches versus Eastern it was a spirited and wild contest.  The Mustangs got on the board first with another Josh Abplanalp goal coming from his defensive pressure in the 9th minute.  The Mustangs held the lead for most of the 1st half until Eastern evened the score with a quick counter down the left side of the WWCC defense in the 42nd minute.  The score would remained tied until the halftime break with each team having 1 goal.

The action heated up in the second half, WWCC took a 2 to 1 lead in the 47th minute with a Ramon Aparicio goal after a great Josh Abplanalp run and assist.  USU-E would score the next 2 goals to take a 3 to 2 lead with just 20 minutes to play.  Jesse Lopez scored a goal off of a free kick about 25 yards away in the 78th minute to even the score 3 to 3.  Just when the match seemed destined to go to overtime Briston Lowell scored a great headed goal in the 88th minute from a Ramon Aparicio corner kick.  The Mustangs were able to maintain the lead in the final 2 minutes and got the victory 4 -3 and WWCC starts the season with a 1 - 0 - 0 record.

Mustang Man of the Match: Briston Lowell for the match winning goal and 8 shots on the day.  If it wasn't for some great saves from the USU-E keeper he probably would have had a hatrick.
