Mustangs Lose Lead in Last Scrimmage of 2018

On Saturday in Henderson Nevada the Mustangs played their fourth game in four days when they played against Summerlin FC in a scrimmage.  Summerlin FC is an adult club team that is affiliated with the US Premiership in the Nevada Region.

The first half was dominated in play by the Mustangs.  The possession was in favor of WWCC and the ball was in the attacking half for Western the majority of the half.  However the Mustangs did not take advantage of their opportunities and only score once in the half.  Beamer Wilcken scored in the 42nd minute of play off of a free kick.  The score going into the break was 1 - 0 in favor of WWCC.

The second half was a much more balanced half in terms of run of play.  Both team had chances and created opportunities.  Again the Mustangs struggled to find the net.  While Summerlin FC scored twice in the 72nd minute and in the 83rd minute.  Any last minute chances from WWCC were thwarted by the Summerlin FC defense.  The score at the end of the scrimmage was 2 to 1 in favor of Summerlin FC.

Mustang Man of the Match: Beamer Wilcken - for the lone goal off of a brilliant free kick.

Match Facts - Shots - WWCC 9, SFC 18; Assists - WWCC 0, SFC 1; Saves - WWCC 6, SFC 4; Corner Kicks - WWCC 7, SFC 4; Free Kicks - WWCC 8, SFC 4; Cards - WWCC 0, SFC 0.

WWCC Runs Out of Gas in the Desert vs #20 CSN

On Friday August 24th the Western Wyoming Men's Soccer Mustangs played their second Region 18 opponent of the regular season when they squared off against the Coyotes of the College of Southern Nevada, who are currently ranked #20 in the NJCAA's latest poll.

The match was played at a frantic pace in the first half with the CSN speed apparent on the outsides of the pitch while the Mustangs held their own.  After 45 minutes of play the score was scoreless.

In the second half the Mustangs continued to play tough defense while trying to build an offense and a counter attack.  The mood of the match was turned in the 66th minute when CSN scored their first goal.  The goal for the home team deflated the visiting Mustangs.  The Coyotes scored twice more in the last part of the second half in the minutes 78 and 85.  The final score was 3 - 0 in favor of CSN.  The loss brings the WWCC record down to 0 - 2 - 0 on the early 2018 season.

Mustang Man of the Match: Kingdom Wanjoku - played tireless soccer on the wings - both defense and offense.

Match Facts - Shots - WWCC 7, CSN 21; Assists - WWCC 0, CSN 3; Saves - WWCC 6, CSN 0; Corner Kicks - WWCC 2, CSN 5; Free Kicks - WWCC 7, CSN 14; Cards - WWCC 1, CSN 0.

Dixie State Scrimmage Shows Defensive Improvement for Western

A day after suffering a loss to start the 2018 regular season the Mustangs traveled south to St. George UT for a scrimmage against Dixie State.  DSU is a 4 year NCAA Division II school.

The Traiblazers showed their class throughout most of the scrimmage, keeping the majority of the possession and limiting the chances of the Mustangs.  However, WWCC was up to the task defensively and made DSU earn their goals.  In the first half DSU only found net once, which was in the 21st minute.  Joe Venhaus was the keeper for the Mustangs in the first half.

In the second half some fatigue and mental mistakes creeped into the Mustang backline.  The Trailblazers were able to score 3 goals in the second forty five minutes of play.  DSU goals came in the 53rd, 61st and 75th minute.  WWCC was unable to score again for two shutouts in a row.  Nic Kautzman was the keeper for Western in the second half.

Mustang Man of the Match: Zaxton Hillman - constant hustle, a shot and a corner kick earned and taken.

Match Facts - Shots - WWCC 4, DSU 36; Assists - WWCC 0, DSU 4; Saves - WWCC 11, DSU 1; Corner Kicks - WWCC 1, DSU 10; Free Kicks - WWCC 6, DSU 8; Cards - WWCC 0, DSU 0.

Mustangs Start 2018 Season with a Loss

The Mustangs started the 2018 regular season at home against the USU- Eastern Golden Eagles on Wednesday at Rock Springs High School.

USU - Eastern scored first in the 6th minute of play.  Western allowed a USU-E forward to slip behind them in the middle of the pitch.  For the next 20 - 25 minutes it was a good battle between the two squads.  In the 33rd minute lightning delayed the match for over an hour.  When play resumed USU-Eastern scored a second goal to take a 2 to 0 lead into the halftime break.  Due to the lengthy lightning delay the halftime was just a few minutes long as the players got water, instruction and switched sides of the field.

The second half was not a great showing for the Mustangs as they continued to allow penetration on their back line and gave up too many shots from the opposition. USU-Eastern added 3 more goals in this half in the 51st, 56th and 79th minute.  WWCC had a couple of opportunities but ended the game without a goal.  The final score was USU-Eastern 5 and WWCC 0.  This loss made the Mustang 2018 record to 0 - 1 - 0.

Mustang Man of the Match: Gunner Erickson - 2 shots, provided the most offense for the Mustangs

Match Facts - Shots - WWCC 7, USUE 21; Assists - WWCC 0, USUE 5; Saves - WWCC 13, USUE 2; Corner Kicks - WWCC 1, USUE 1; Free Kicks - WWCC 6, USUE 11; Cards - WWCC 1, USUE 1.

WNCC Scrimmage Shows Mustang Grit

On Saturday in Scottsbluff NE the Mustangs faced the Cougars in a scrimmage.  This was the third scrimmage for the Mustangs in the week after traveling to Salt Lake City UT and to Craig CO.

The Cougars showed their offensive prowess and had most of the action in the first part of their scrimmage in the Mustang side of the field.  WNCC scored in 8th minute to take an early lead.  WWCC answered back in the 25th minute when Kayden Freeland scored off of a free kick from about 35 yards out.  In the 38th minute WNCC scored a second time in the half to take a 2 to 1 lead into the break.

In the second half the Mustangs showed more fight and resolve and started to find more possession of the ball.  Sadly the Cougars added to their lead in the 48th minute.  The Mustangs scored a second goal in the 67th minute of play when Rene Guadarrama placed a nice ball past the WNCC keeper off of an assist from Josh Crew.  In the last 20 plus minutes the Mustangs could not find an equalizing goal.  The final score for the scrimmage was 3 to 2 in favor of the home team - WNCC Cougars.  The Mustangs played without several of their team members as they are still nursing injuries.

Mustang Man of the Match: Kayden Freeland - for a great long distance free kick

Match Facts - Shots - WWCC 7, WNCC 15; Assists - WWCC 1, WNCC 3; Saves - WWCC 6, WNCC 3; Corner Kicks - WWCC 1, WNCC 0; Free Kicks - WWCC 8, WNCC 12; Cards - WWCC 0, CNCC 0.

Second Scrimmage a Success for WWCC

On Friday in Craig CO the Mustangs had a scrimmage against the Spartans of Colorado Northwest Community College.  This was the first ever meeting between these two schools.

The first couple of minutes were a good back and forth from the two squads.  In the 11th minute a flick on header from Rene Guadarrama sent Beamer Wilcken on past the CNCC defense where Beamer placed the ball into the net.  The halftime score would be 1 - 0 as the WWCC team was starting to find their footing and had spots were they could take over the match and the possession of the match.

In the second half Josh Rawson added his first collegiate goal off of a Josh Crew corner kick in the 60th minute.  The 2 goals for Western were plenty for the Mustangs to take the scrimmage from the Spartans.  The final score was 2 to 0 in favor of WWCC.  Joe Venhaus is credited with the 90 minute shutout.

Mustang Man of the Match: Josh Rawson - brilliant header off of a corner kick

Match Facts - Shots - WWCC 14, CNCC 12; Assists - WWCC 2, CNCC 0; Saves - WWCC 6, CNCC 6; Corner Kicks - WWCC 5, CNCC 3; Free Kicks - WWCC 3, CNCC 5; Cards - WWCC 0, CNCC 0.

Karson Liddell - Sophomore Defender 2018

Karson Liddell has signed his second National Letter of Intent to play college soccer at Western Wyoming Community College in Rock Springs WY.  Karson is from Kaysville UT and a graduate from Davis High School.

In his first season with the Mustangs Karson played mainly as a center back.  Liddell also found time on the field his freshman year on occasion as an outside back.  He racked up 3 Starts and 25 halves played during his first campaign with Western.

In the off season Karson continued to improve his footwork and his ability to play defense both in 1 on 1 situations and as a backline of 4 defenders.  We feel he has improved since he first came on campus the most with his positioning and his ability to lead his teammates.

In the classroom Karson's second semester was stellar with him earning a spot on the Dean's Honor Roll.  If Karson continues to his academic work he should be on track to graduate with his Associates Degree in May of 2019.

Western is looking forward to having Karson as part of the team in the 2018-2019 season.  Liddell's touch on the ball and his size should help him find his way onto the field as a center back, outside back or even a defensive mid.  Welcome back Karson!
