NJC Overtime Goals Defeats WWCC on the road

On Thursday in Sterling Colorado the Mustangs played against Northeastern Junior College.  The Plainsmen and WWCC have matched up in the first round of the Region IX playoffs the previous two seasons.  These match ups are always tough and usually a one goal contest.

NJC started quickly on the attack and put a goal past the WWCC defense and Joe Venhaus in the 6th minute of play.  The Mustangs equalized in the 37th minute when Colton Mathys scored a header off of a Kayden Freeland free kick.  The score line would not change the rest of the first half as the teams would remain tied at 1 to 1.

The second half was grueling on both teams as the weather was very hot and dry and WWCC was coming off of a road match the day before.  Both teams had some chances but neither could score in the second half of the match.  The score at the end of regulation was 1 to 1.

In NJCAA soccer regular season matches when tied after 90 minutes go directly into a sudden victory overtime.  Overtime in college soccer consists of two halves of 10 minutes a piece.  The first to score wins.  If the score remains a tie after 110 minutes then the match will be a draw.

For 16 minutes of the 20 minutes of allotted overtime the Mustangs played solid defense with some counter attacks.  Sadly the Plainsmen hit a wonderful shot in the 106th minute of play to end the match with a double overtime sudden victory win for NJC.  This heartbreaking loss for WWCC lowers their overall 2018 record to 0 - 6 - 0.

Mustang Man of the Match: Joe Venhaus - Joe made several big saves on the day to keep WWCC in the match - 7 saves during the match.
