On Saturday in Rock Springs the WWCC Mustangs hosted their second oldest rivals when the Cougars from Western Nebraska Community College. These teams met three times last season including the 2011 Region IX tournament. Today's results were much different than last seasons disappointment tournament play for the Mustangs. Once again, for the third start match, WWCC got on the board in the first 5 minutes. Steven Shelley scored his first goal of the match in the 3rd minute off of an assist by Logan Anderson. Steven Shelley would have 2 more goals on the day including the second goal of the match in the 12th minute again from an Anderson assist. This second Shelley goal was a one time shot with high pressure put on Steven chipping the goalie from about 20 yards out. The WWCC scoring continued in the 26th minute when Richard Harris' free kick hit off the crossbar and bounced in front of the goal, Bernie Manuel easily collected it and blasted it past the WNCC Keeper. The half time score was 3 - 0 in favor of the Mustangs.
In the second half the Mustangs were able to extend their lead while getting all players into the match and working on their possession. The lead was increased to 4 goals in the 68th minute when Taylor Egbert scored off an Ashenafi Negeri assist. Taylor's goal was his ninth of the season and is leading the team. Taylor beat the keeper with a nice little chip on the left side of the goal. In the 73rd minute the Mustangs were called for a penalty in the box and WNCC stepped up to take the penalty kick. Mitch Jensen, the WWCC keeper denied the shot and the follow up. This was Mitch's second penalty faced this season and he has saved both attempts. The final Mustang goal came from Steven Shelley who just out touched the WNCC keeper after a Jarom Stuart header. This was Shelley's third goal of the match and the second hat-trick of the WWCC season. WNCC did score one goal in the 87th minute to ruin the Mustang shutout and get the Cougars on the board. The final score was WWCC 5 and WNCC 1. This win brings the WWCC record to 5 wins and 2 losses and a 1 - 1 - 0 Region IX record.
