Ty Nielsen a 2013 graduate from Lehi High School in Lehi Utah has signed his National Letter of Intent to play soccer for Western Wyoming Community College in Rock Springs WY.
Ty was a part of the 2013 5A State Championship team for the Lehi Pioneers. Ty was a captain of the LHS team. For his efforts and skills Nielsen was named to the 2nd Team 5A All State team. Ty played in the midfield and scored 5 goals as an upperclassman for the Pioneers. During his 4 years with LHS Ty and the Pioneers played in and won 2 state championships (2013 - 5A and 2010 - 4A) and qualified for the state playoffs the other two years.
Ty was one of the most impressive recruits that we saw this off-season. Ty came for a tryout to the Rock Springs campus in January. Ty did a great job of controlling the midfield keeping possession and involving his teammates during the tryout. Those are also the skills that he displayed as a player with Lehi High.
Nielsen fills a big need for WWCC as we graduated three of our four starting midfielders this spring. Ty has the skill set to play any of the midfield positions in the Mustang diamond. But we feel that his best position will probably be the attacking midfield spot. His accurate passing and good vision will help Western keep the ball at our feet and in attacking and possessing positions.
Ty served a 2 year LDS mission to the Dominican Republic after graduation from Lehi High. His additional years of age and experience will help Nielsen to be a mature voice and leader on the team. We expect him to come into the team this summer and fight right away for a starting role and position of a leader on the 2016 Western Wyoming team.
