Long Road Trip for 1st Scrimmages of 2016

The first official scrimmage match of 2016 was played in Salt Lake City UT against SLCC.  It was broken up into three separate 30 minute periods.  The first period, Western put out their fitness leaders from training camp.  The second period was pretty close to what could be their starting lineup and the third period was for more reserve type players.  SLCC scored early on in the 1st period on a penalty kick and later added another goal for a 2 - 0 lead at the end of period #1.  In the 2nd period WWCC found more success but could not beat the SLCC defense and conceded one goal in the second period.  Finally in the 3rd period it was a very evenly played match but a keeper mistake gave SLCC a 1 - 0 lead at the end of that period.  At the end of the day it was a 4 - 0 final score for SLCC after the 3 periods.

Mustang Man of the Match: Mike Wolken, brought good intensity and play every minute on the pitch.

The second scrimmage of 2016 and on the road trip was in Henderson NV against the Coyotes from the College of Southern Nevada.  This was the first meeting between the two schools.  It was a great tune-up for both teams.  The match was played at a high level but neither team was able to score until around the 75th minute.  A Southern Nevada player hit a rocket of a shot that gave them a 1 - 0 lead.  The Mustangs fought back and continued to ask questions of the Coyote defense.  The break through occurred with little time left on the clock when Ty Nielsen sent a free kick into the box that was not controlled by the CSN keeper and an easy put back for a goal was kicked in by Grayson Barnes.


Mustang Man of the Match: Ty Nielsen, for the assist in the dying minutes and for solid play throughout the scrimmage.
