Northwest Kansas Spoil WWCC Home Opener

On Friday on the Tiger Turf of Rock Springs High School the 2013 Western Wyoming Community College Mustangs squared off against the Mavericks of Northwest Kansas Technical College.  This was the third year in a row the two teams have faced each other, all the previous matched were wins for the Mustangs.  Western started the scoring in the 4th minute when Brock Mosier headed a ball past the NWKTC keeper from a Rico Mendez pass.  The Mavericks took control of the play of the match shortly after the goal.  The Mustangs struggled to play at the same speed and intensity at the guest players and team.  The Mavericks evened the match with a goal in the 15th minute.  The goal was scored by a nicely sent ball that was perfectly timed for the NWKTC forward to slot past the WWCC keeper Taylor West.  Even though NWKTC dominated much of the play in the first half the score was tied at the half time break.
In the second half WWCC did play better but were still not seeing as much of the ball as they would have liked.  53rd minute was the second goal of the match for NWKTC when a well paced kick snuck into the upper corner and past Taylor West.  The Maverick lead was 2 - 1 for twenty plus minutes.  DJ Searcy and his hustle kicked in a ball off of a scrum in front of the net in the 74th minute to tie the match at 2 goals a piece.  Just when the match looked like the Mustangs would escape with a tie the Mavericks scored in the 85th minute of play.  The Mustangs tried to switch formations to find the match tying goal but put themselves at risk on the back line and committed a foul in the penalty box.  NWKTC scored the penalty in the 89th minute and pulled to a 4 - 2 lead which they kept for the last minute of play.  The loss moves the Mustang's 2013 record to 2 - 2.
